Recently, TorrentFreak published a list of the top 10 most “streamed” movies of 2022. The act of watching movies “illegally” online continues to be a persistent thorn in the side of filmmakers and production companies, especially when official streaming platforms and film studios are often unable to reach audiences across many countries worldwide. So, which 10 movies were most frequently watched through unofficial means last year?

Disney, or more specifically the Disney+ platform, contributed significantly to this list with a surprisingly high number of titles. Most of the notable productions, whether good or bad, have drawn audiences to “pull” them towards viewing, particularly titles like Moon Knight and She-Hulk from Marvel, as well as three films belonging to the Star Wars franchise, including Obi-Wan Kenobi, The Book of Boba Fett, and Andor.

Other streaming platforms contributed one or two films to the list, including Netflix’s Stranger Things, Paramount+’s Halo, and two titles from Amazon Prime: The Rings of Power (part of the Lord of the Rings series) and The Boys. Notably, The Rings of Power ranked as the series with the highest “streamed” status, winning the Audience Award this year.

Meanwhile, the name that no one expected to dominate this year was House of the Dragon from HBO. The prequel to Game of Thrones gained a wide audience despite not being available for streaming, simultaneously contributing to the brand’s resurgence after a two-year hiatus in 2020-2021.

Overall, it’s notable that all films ranked this year are completely new, indicating that many familiar works like the animated series Rick and Morty have completely fallen off the radar.
