On June 17, 2021, the anime adaptation titled Shuumatsu no Valkyrie, or Record of Ragnarok, was finally released. This anime is streamed online on Netflix and produced by Graphinica, with the first season consisting of 12 episodes.

Season 2 of Record of Ragnarok will consist of 15 episodes. However, the second part of Record of Ragnarok Season 2 may only include 5 episodes. The release schedule for this part has not yet been confirmed.
3. Showcasing Various Historical Figures and Deities
One of the intriguing aspects of Record of Ragnarok is the focus on deities. This anime presents various mythological figures, particularly gods from different cultures.
These gods come from various mythologies, such as Buddhism (Buddha), Hinduism (Shiva), Greek mythology (Zeus, Poseidon, Heracles, etc.), Norse mythology (Thor, Odin, Loki, Valkyrie), and Japanese mythology (Bishamonten and Susano’o no Mikoto).
Similar to the gods, Record of Ragnarok also features humans from mythology or history. For instance, the legendary Lu Bu from the Three Kingdoms period in China, Adam – the first human considered the father of mankind, Jack the Ripper – a notorious serial killer in history, scientist Nikola Tesla, and many others.
4. About ‘Ragnarok’
The Valkyrie named Brunnhilde is the character responsible for initiating Ragnarok as a means to determine whether humanity is worthy of survival. In this series, 13 gods and 13 of the strongest humans will compete in a battle at the Valhalla arena.
The rules for the battle are straightforward: each warrior will fight until one side is defeated. If one side wins 7 out of 13 matches, that side is declared the winner of the event.
Ragnarok itself is a significant event in Norse mythology, symbolizing the end of the world through a great battle between gods led by Odin and the forces of chaos (including monsters and undead) led by Surtr.
5. List of Warriors from the Gods’ Side
Despite the manga and anime continuing, the list of warriors from both sides has been revealed right from the start. Below is the list of warriors from the gods’ side:
- God Zeus
- Buddha (later replaced by Hades)
- Loki
- Apollo
- Poseidon
- Susano’o no Mikoto
- Thor
- Bishamonten
- Anubis

Some of the notable competitors include: Thor, Zeus, Poseidon, Heracles, Shiva, Bishamonten, and Hades. Beelzebub is currently competing against Tesla.
Buddha was initially part of the gods’ side but later switched to the human side.
6. List of Warriors from the Human Side
The list of warriors from the human side (Einherjar) is as follows:
- Adam
- King Leonidas
- Nikola Tesla
- Sasaki Kojiro
- Raiden Tameemon
- Grigori Rasputin
- Lu Bu
- Okita Souji
- Michel Nostradamus
- Simo Hayha
- Sakata Kintoki
- Jack the Ripper
- Buddha (later switched from the gods’ side)
It is worth noting that these Einherjar are resurrected in their strongest forms, not limited by their physical state at death. An exception applies to Sasaki Kojiro.
So far, the warriors who have fought include: Lu Bu, Adam, Sasaki Kojiro, Jack the Ripper, Raiden Tameemon, Buddha, and the Thirteen Divine Warriors. Currently, Tesla is fighting against Beelzebub.
7. More Einherjar Warriors Selected
After the gods’ side agreed to participate in Ragnarok, Brunnhilde – with her leadership role – gathered Einherjar, promptly selecting several warriors.
In the current lineup of potential human warriors, we find historical figures such as Abraham Lincoln, John Lennon, Mother Teresa, Salvador Dali, Marilyn Monroe, Che Guevara, Steve Jobs, Mahatma Gandhi, Ludwig van Beethoven, Albert Einstein, Adolf Hitler, Mao Zedong, Pablo Picasso, Nefertiti, Sakamoto Ryoma, Hideyo Noguchi, Marianne, and Cleopatra. All these individuals are significant figures that have shaped human civilization.
8. Buddha’s Role in the Heavenly Realm
In episode 10 of Record of Ragnarok Season 2, it is stated that the next warrior for the gods’ side will be Buddha. However, when Buddha enters the Valhalla battlefield, he declares that he will fight for humanity.
9. Beelzebub is Considered a Dark Force
In the list of warriors on the gods’ side, there is Beelzebub. This is quite interesting because Beelzebub is known as a demonic entity stemming from various mythologies, often portrayed as a deity of flies or darkness.
Moreover, there are historical accounts that describe Beelzebub as a significant deity in the lineage of the Philistines and Abraham, known by various titles such as “Lord of the Flies,” “Anathema,” “God of Evil Spirits,” and “God of Darkness.”
10. Jack the Ripper’s Notorious Reputation
Jack the Ripper is infamously known as one of the most notorious serial killers in human history, having fought in Ragnarok and defeated Heracles. However, his presence in the series has sparked significant debate, particularly because he is currently engaged in battle against a prominent deity.
Despite this, Jack the Ripper has gained immense popularity. Among all characters in Record of Ragnarok, he ranks second with 917 votes, just behind Adam, who received 1,552 votes.
11. Record of Ragnarok Banned in Several Regions
To be honest, Record of Ragnarok has faced censorship for displaying graphic imagery and concepts related to divine characters, particularly the gods.
It is clear that the release of this anime has both advantages and drawbacks, especially as it resonates strongly with fans in various regions. As a result, Netflix decided to remove Record of Ragnarok from its catalog in certain territories.
As of now, the struggle for humanity’s survival in the world of Record of Ragnarok continues through these fierce battles against the divine forces.
