According to exclusive information from South Korea’s Naver on October 13, the film The Escape of the Seven has experienced significant upheaval within its production team. Specifically, the film’s main director, Joo Dong Min, has abruptly withdrawn from the project, coinciding with the filming of the second season beginning shortly thereafter.
The Escape of the Seven is a high-budget project following the success of screenwriter Kim Soon Ok and director Joo Dong Min after Penthouse. The first part has already been filmed and is set to premiere in November. Recently, the actors have continued filming the second part, but without director Joo. Instead, production manager Oh Joon Hyuk has taken over as the main director of the series.
Viewers are understandably confused, especially since the reasons behind director Joo’s departure have not been disclosed. While filming has not been disrupted, many are concerned about how the quality of the show may be affected. There are fears that The Escape of the Seven will be heavily criticized for its negative themes, as the show has been flagged due to its violent content, leading it to receive a 19+ rating, particularly for its recent episodes.
Furthermore, the South Korean Communications Standards Commission (KCSC) has received numerous complaints from the public regarding the provocative themes in The Escape of the Seven. This includes shocking deaths of characters throughout the series, depictions of excessive substance abuse, and the portrayal of teenage pregnancies. Additionally, the graphic imagery surrounding school environments and negative portrayals of teachers have sparked considerable debate regarding the show’s appropriateness.
After a week of intense speculation, The Escape of the Seven is set to continue airing this coming Saturday and Sunday on SBS.
