In today’s article titled Classic Excerpt, GameK is excited to introduce a captivating excerpt from the famous 2006 film “300,” produced by Warner Bros. The film portrays the legendary battle of “Thermopylae” in ancient Greek history, where 300 Spartan warriors fought valiantly against a million-strong Persian army at the narrow pass of Thermopylae (the only land route into Greece from the East).
The image illustrates King Leonidas at Thermopylae, facing King Xerxes and his invading army (comprising over one million soldiers) as they deeply penetrated the heartland of Greece. However, despite the fierce resistance from the defending forces, the Persian army eventually advanced towards the battlefield of Athens.
One year later, after gathering considerable forces (approximately 40,000 men), the Greek army launched a counter-offensive and decisively won at the Battle of Plataea (479 BC), thus concluding the Persian invasion.
The film “300,” directed by Zack Snyder, was a significant success, winning the Saturn Award for Best Fantasy Film at the 34th awards ceremony. This award is given by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films for outstanding works in the fantasy genre. Not only did the film achieve commercial success upon its release in March 2007, grossing $70 million, but “300” also became the highest-grossing film of 2007 and ranked third among the most successful action films after “The Matrix Reloaded” and “The Passion of the Christ.”
