According to Deadline, Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver premiered on April 19 and is the leading global title on Netflix this past week. The film attracted 21.4 million views over the weekend, slightly lower than Part One’s 23.9 million views from its debut at the end of last year. Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver also surpassed the animated film Woody the Woodpecker Goes to Camp, which garnered 18.8 million views.
According to data from FlixPatrol, Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver ranked first in 83 countries, including major markets like the US, UK, France, Germany, Spain, and Vietnam. Its popularity also helped Part One of the film return to the top 5 most-watched films on Netflix last week with over 5.5 million views.
This achievement marks director Zack Snyder’s third work in the global top 10. Before the two parts of Rebel Moon, his zombie film Army of the Dead also reached similar milestones.
Despite a good number of views, Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver faced mixed reviews from critics and audiences regarding its quality. The film only achieved a “rotten” score of 15% on Rotten Tomatoes. This is also the lowest rating for Zack Snyder after 20 years in Hollywood. As a result, many have referred to it as a “black mark” in his filmmaking career.
Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver is seen by many as a “blemish” in Zack Snyder’s 20-year filmmaking career.
Almost all international critics have commented on the film’s borrowing from many sci-fi brands, lacking originality in the storyline. Variety noted that instead of deciding to split Rebel Moon into two films with a runtime of over 4 hours, director Zack Snyder could have condensed it into one film with a shorter duration. Rolling Stone further stated that audiences should stay away from the TV if they do not want to waste hours on a film that is excessively subpar like Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver.
With a budget exceeding 166 million USD (more than 4,200 billion VND), Rebel Moon is one of the most expensive projects ever undertaken by Netflix. Although the project belongs to the sci-fi genre, it borrows heavily from the aesthetics of the Star Wars franchise. The film features a star-studded cast, including Sofia Boutella, Doona Bae, Charlie Hunnam, and Anthony Hopkins.
The storyline is set on a distant planet beyond Earth. Here, the inhabitants enjoy a peaceful life despite lacking material wealth. However, everything changes when the Motherworld army invades, aiming to conquer and enslave the planet.
The main character, Kora (Sofia Boutella), is a skilled warrior of the Motherworld army but decides to rebel. She resolves to gather the best soldiers to fight for peace and justice.
