The Shawshank Redemption (translated as The Shawshank Prison) was written and directed by Frank Darabont, based on the novella by Stephen King titled “Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption“. The main actors in the film are Tim Robbins as Andy Dufresne and Morgan Freeman as Ellis Boyd “Red” Redding. The Shawshank Redemption is widely regarded as one of the greatest films of all time, currently standing as the top film in the IMDb 100 with a score of 9.3/10.
Here are some life lessons that can be learned from this film.
In the modern era, Shawshank Redemption is a classic film, but at the time of its release, it struggled to attract audiences due to a somewhat less appealing premise. The prison setting may have deterred viewers, and it wasn’t until later that the film gained significant popularity. The film’s dramatic portrayal of the lives of male inmates contrasts sharply with the less prominent female roles, as the latter only occasionally appear.
However, the film’s key moments eventually contributed to its recognition among audiences, particularly a memorable song about friendship and hope. Shawshank is the name of the prison where Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) serves his sentence after being wrongfully convicted in a murder case.
Inside the prison where “everyone is just a convict,” Andy befriends other inmates, such as the elderly librarian Brooks (James Whitmore), the soft-spoken Heywood (William Sadler), and the intimidating group led by Bogs (Mark Rolston). Yet, the most significant bond is with Red (Morgan Freeman), a fellow inmate who has the ability to connect with others and bring rare items from the outside world to the prisoners. Their camaraderie deepens over the years as events unfold, leaving a lasting impression on anyone who has watched the film.
1. Always Hold onto Hope
After serving decades in prison, Red’s only reason to survive in the bleak environment is hope. Andy, too, maintains his optimism even when faced with the harsh treatment from the prison warden Norton and the gang known as “The Sisters.” Hope remains a bright light within him.
Hope is the driving force that enables Andy to escape using… a simple rock hammer. While many inmates believe that “you have to lose hope for 600 years“, Andy manages to keep his hope alive for less than 20 years. Hope also helps Andy find true friends within prison – a place where trust is rare and respect is often disregarded.
By the end of the film, Andy tells Red, “Hope is a good thing, maybe the best thing. And no good thing ever dies.“
Only when you stop believing in good things, does your life truly come to an end.
“Get Busy Living or Get Busy Dying”
When people have been imprisoned for a long time, it can be difficult to find meaning in life outside the prison walls. However, some individuals dare to rise up against the odds.
Brooks Hatlen, an elderly inmate who served 50 years, is released but is overwhelmed by the modern world outside. Unable to adapt, he finds himself hopeless and ultimately takes his own life. In contrast, Andy never accepts to remain trapped in such a situation, always seeking to bring meaning to life even within the walls of Shawshank. Before successfully escaping, Andy instills hope and belief in Red, ensuring that he too will find freedom one day.
3. Happiness Always Lies Beyond the Longest Road
“Andy escaped by crawling through a sewage pipe nearly 500 meters long, which I can’t imagine.” – Red.
Sometimes, you must let go of the “longest road” to embrace beautiful outcomes. Life is not always a bed of roses, but it constantly presents dangers. Therefore, we must strive to pass through every obstacle. Andy never submitted to the harsh rules of the prison system, continuously fighting against the oppressive spirit of Shawshank.
This story resonates with our lives; anyone can be overwhelmed when the road is not smooth. When we face challenges, life becomes more meaningful.
4. Maintain Your Mental State Even When Circumstances Turn Dark
When new challenges arise and you find yourself at a crossroads, stay calm and seek ways to restore your mental peace. Focus on maintaining a stable mindset while finding meaning in your life and for those around you.
Andy achieved a lot during his long imprisonment: helping the library staff, preparing tax returns, and providing financial plans to benefit the prison authorities, writing letters for funding the library in prison, and mentoring fellow inmate Tommy Williams… Life always holds more meaning than mere survival, even when you’re in the most unfavorable conditions.
5. Helping Others Will Lead You to Infinite Joy
Warden Samuel Norton, the Shawshank prison director, exploited the inmates’ labor for public works, manipulating costs by using skilled workers, and exploited Andy for his financial gains under the alias “Randall Stephens.” After successfully escaping, Andy took all the lost documents and exposed Norton for embezzlement and murder. Eventually, Norton had no choice but to take his own life in his office. As Red reflects, the end of the story reveals that “it’s not about the crime, but the kinds of things Andy Dufresne could have seen.“
Always think carefully before exploiting someone’s worth.
