For die-hard fans of Pokemon, Mewtwo is undoubtedly one of the most recognizable Pokémon, known for its incredible strength. Mewtwo has a unique appearance characterized by its cold demeanor and a tall, imposing physique compared to other Pokémon. Naturally, the emergence of Mewtwo has sparked a long narrative, leading to a separate movie about it, but due to its dark themes and somber tone, which doesn’t align with the general ideals of the Pokémon franchise, the movie was ultimately cut.
The story begins when a group of Team Rocket members infiltrates and discovers Mew’s hiding place – a Pokémon considered to be the strongest of all time. After a long search period, they finally obtained a genetic sample of this Pokémon.
With the ambition to dominate the Pokémon world, this evil organization sought to harness the DNA of powerful Pokémon and thus created Mewtwo. Besides this, there were other cloned versions such as Charmandertwo, Bulbasaurtwo, Squirtletwo, and Ambertwo – a clone of Fuji’s daughter, Amber.
Even while still in the lab, Mewtwo and other clones communicated with each other through a psychic space. They could think like humans and constantly posed existential questions to each other without ever finding satisfactory answers. Over time, Fuji and his colleagues discovered this phenomenon, and with him, it signaled a glimmer of hope as one day, his daughter Amber would return.
The narrative continues with the clones, five trainers embark on a journey through the psychic space, with Ambertwo leading them to the place where she used to live when she was still alive, simultaneously introducing Mewtwo to the elements of life, such as the sun, the moon, and the stars.
Then, when the Moonlight appeared, Mewtwo was surprised to learn from Ambertwo that this was indeed the Moon, and the reason why the stars always twinkled in the sky at night was so that no one among them felt lonely.
As the girl began to fade, the clones started to dissolve… Because they were clones of common Pokémon, they didn’t possess the ability to survive through this prolonged experimental process, and Ambertwo was no exception. Just before completely vanishing, the girl gently smiled and said to Mewtwo: “I think I have to say goodbye…”
The tears flowed down Mewtwo’s face as the essence of life was pouring out, the little creature raised its hand to wipe away the tears and was baffled by its own emotions. Ambertwo then interpreted:
“I once heard a story before sleeping, whenever Pokémon feel sad, they cry. The tears of them are not for this life…”
“Don’t cry, Mewtwo, you should be happy!”
You are still alive, and this life is truly wonderful…”
In the end, Ambertwo also faded away, leaving Mewtwo in the vast psychic space. She was the first and only person to share a long time living in solitude, which shaped her cold personality. When awakening to the real world, Mewtwo looked around the lab that was filled with sadness and still asked the existential question: “Who am I?”
From here, the legendary tale of a cold Mewtwo officially begins.
