In 2008, Marvel’s film universe laid its foundation with the success of Iron Man. After eight years of development, Marvel’s superhero brand has garnered global recognition through a series of interconnected projects that have been released. However, as of now, fans are left with a significant question regarding the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU): After Avengers: Infinity War, following the powerful defeat of Thanos, what direction will the MCU take?
In a recent interview, the Russo brothers, who directed Captain America: Civil War just a few months prior, shared a lot of information regarding the upcoming Marvel film projects. Director Anthony Russo mentioned:
“I can’t share too much, but the two upcoming films (the two parts of Avengers: Infinity War) are expected to serve as a major conclusion for every thread established in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since the first Iron Man film. Besides the complete closure, these two films will also open up new paths, creating a new universe for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”
From what Director Anthony Russo has revealed, it is clear that Infinity War will be a significant conclusion for the superhero realm that has been built since 2008. However, it also seems to be the gateway to a new universe, an entirely fresh chapter for the Marvel franchise. Will this be a complete reset for Marvel or not?
The Russo brothers are currently being highly regarded by Marvel fans for the successes they have brought to Civil War. With their skills, the duo has transformed Captain America: Civil War into an extraordinary masterpiece where all the superheroes in the film were well represented, showcasing their strengths to the audience. However, with Infinity War, the scale of characters is expected to be much larger, which will pose significant challenges for the two directors.
“I feel quite pressured because I always have to ensure that the decisions made, the choices I make, positively influence the narrative and the reality, and I must arrange the details so they fit appropriately, deciding which elements to keep or discard. Sometimes I am very conflicted because I want to include all Marvel characters in the film, but I must ensure that it doesn’t dilute the story.”
Although Infinity War is still over a year away from its official release, the Russo brothers have been preparing mentally for the film’s production, which will involve a massive cast of characters. In particular, new characters like Captain Marvel, played by Brie Larson, will also be introduced for the first time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
