Trailer for “Rings”
The trailer opens with a woman desperately trying to destroy all electronic devices in her house, especially the television, as the haunting Samara can still emerge from outside. Next, we see a woman looking very concerned upon hearing her boyfriend recount the legend surrounding a cursed videotape he just watched. She decides to sacrifice her life for her love, but unexpectedly, within the cursed tape, the audience is already familiar with another hidden horror film segment. This situation forces the girl into a terrifying curse, transforming her into a vessel for Samara’s resurrection.
The script of the film is based on a Japanese folklore surrounding the curse of a videotape. Anyone who watches it will share it with someone else within seven days or face death. The first version was directed by Gore Verbinski, featuring actress Naomi Watts, and it grossed an impressive $249.3 million worldwide, becoming a classic horror film that left audiences terrified.
The sequel, directed by Hideo Nakata, also achieved significant success, earning around $161 million. This presents a considerable challenge for the third installment, as the cultural context of VHS tapes has faded over the years. If Samara were to appear in modern times, how would the filmmakers adapt the narrative to inflict horror on the audience? The film is set to be released on October 28 of this year, under the direction of Spanish filmmaker F. Javier Gutiérrez.
