Currently, the name Pokemon has become one of the hottest keywords in the gaming community in Vietnam as well as globally. Therefore, it is not too surprising that major film studios like Legendary and Warner Bros. are expressing interest in adapting Pokemon into a Live-Action film project.
Immediately, the news has received quite a warm welcome from fans as it was announced right at the time when Pokemon Go is creating a significant craze worldwide.
However, according to a recent statement from the company that manages the Pokemon Go game, it appears that they are not yet considering turning this game into a Live-Action film project, so the future of this film project is still very much uncertain.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Pokemon Co. and Nintendo companies are currently focusing their full attention on the Pokemon Go game. Both companies believe that implementing another Live-Action project at this time would create a very large distraction.
“At the moment, Pokemon Co. and Nintendo do not want to focus on the film rights because we do not want to have a distraction like that and also do not want to harm the reputation of this game. Launching a film project at this time is not a priority or intention.”
The statement from Pokemon Co. and Nintendo about this issue is entirely understandable when considering the financial aspects. If a Pokemon movie were to be made, the licensing fees that the company would receive from the film industry would only range from 5-10 million USD. Additionally, a small portion of revenue from ticket sales would still be minimal compared to the current revenue generated by the game itself.
According to statistics, on average, Pokemon Go generates around 1 million USD daily just from the US market. Globally, the game’s revenue has reached hundreds of millions of USD. Thus, if a successful live-action film were to be made, its revenue would likely surpass that of the game’s current earnings. Conversely, if the film were to be a failure (which has already happened quite a few times in the gaming community), it would significantly harm the game’s reputation as well as its revenue.
Listening to all this, you might understand why this company is hesitant when it comes to adapting Pokemon Go into a live-action film project. The prospect of a Live-Action film set in the Pokemon universe is still very much uncertain, and for the next few years, the answer from Pokemon Co. and Nintendo regarding this film project will likely remain a firm “No!”
