One of the key factors determining the quality of anime from Japan is the amount of effort put into various aspects of production. This is reflected in the diverse opinions of fans, as we can easily see that long-time anime fans often have a high appreciation for the artistic techniques used in their favorite series. Meanwhile, some fans may be more captivated by the story, character emotions, or the music.
So, what is the most important element that draws a fan’s attention? To find the answer, My Navi Japan conducted a survey of 194 anime fans, mostly students, and discovered that the storyline is the strongest factor that makes a series captivating. Below are the top 5 reasons selected most frequently:
5. Animation Quality (4.1%)
It is quite common for many anime fans in Japan to choose animation quality as a fundamental favorite factor. However, this is also understandable given that not everyone has the experience to deeply appreciate the intricate details in an anime. For outsiders, they often need to watch a lot of anime repeatedly to gain the experience to appreciate the animation design in a work.
4. Realism (4.6%)
There is nothing wrong with wanting an anime to have a profound dimension, addressing many real-world issues, rather than just being mere entertainment. Serious themes are often preferred by those who enjoy shows that both entertain and convey deeper messages.
3. Background Music (5.7%)
While the main theme songs for anime often garner significant attention (and CD sales), background music is a factor that many people choose in the top 5. BGM may not stand out in the music genre but has great potential to impact the viewer’s emotional experience. Theme songs typically open and close episodes, designed to create a strong impression with fans of popular series, while background music is often composed to enhance the emotional context of specific scenes and events.
2. Characters (25.8%)
In real life, we often prefer to listen to someone talk about their feelings when they are emotionally connected to us, regardless of whether the conversation is genuinely captivating. This phenomenon also applies to anime, where over a quarter of respondents indicated that if they liked the characters of a series, they would be more inclined to follow the entire series. No matter whether the fans are drawn by personality traits, psychology, or the exterior appearance of the characters, if the character does not captivate them, it’s hard for anyone to focus on other aspects.
1. Storyline (49%)
According to the survey results from My Navi, a compelling storyline is the most crucial element in creating an engaging anime. Nowadays, most anime are adapted from manga, novels, or video games, which means that the anime has to start with character design and fan service. “There are countless anime with character designs that look appealing, but only a few of the stories are captivating,” shared one of the participating fans in the survey. This shows that not all anime fans are only focused on seeking out characters with “slim waists and large chests” to follow.
