It has been 3 years since G.I. Joe: Retaliation was released in theaters worldwide. At the time of its release, the production team had to spend up to $135 million and grossed an astonishing… $370 million at the global box office. In Retaliation, the filmmakers brought back familiar faces like Channing Tatum (as Duke), Ray Park (as Snake Eyes), and Byung-hun Lee (as Storm Shadow) from G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, but it was Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s appearance as Roadblock that truly stood out.
Despite rumors about The Rock joining G.I. Joe, his acting career had already gained significant momentum prior to this, especially after leaving a strong impression in the hearts of audiences with his role in Fast Five in 2009. Therefore, it’s no surprise that many believe that The Rock’s star power contributed greatly to the success of G.I. Joe: Retaliation.
With such an important role for the success of the series, it is not hard to understand why Paramount and Hasbro would need to accommodate The Rock while planning the G.I. Joe franchise.
Moreover, the shooting schedule for G.I. Joe 3 will have to be arranged according to The Rock’s availability. Recently, the film studio announced that the shooting schedule for G.I. Joe 3 has to be temporarily postponed due to The Rock being too busy and not ready to start filming yet.
According to a statement from Korean actor Byung-hun Lee, who has made a significant mark in Hollywood in recent years and also impressed audiences in The Magnificent Seven, he mentioned that it is indeed a challenge to fit everything into The Rock’s busy schedule.
“I heard that the studio is considering making a third installment of G.I. Joe, but I think right now it hasn’t been officially confirmed because we are still waiting to arrange schedules with the actors.” Byung-hun Lee shared, “They are currently arranging schedules according to the actors, especially for Dwayne Johnson.”
