The manga series Kochira Katsushika-ku Kameari Koen Mae Hashutsujo, also known as “This is the police station in front of Kameari Park in Katsushika Ward,” created by Akimoto Osamu, has just released its 200th volume on September 17, marking the end of a 40-year uninterrupted publication journey in Japan through Weekly Shonen Jump.
Commonly referred to as “Kochikame,” this manga series officially debuted in September 1976 and currently holds the Guinness World Record for “The Most Volumes of a Manga Published.” The conclusion of such a long-lived series marks a bittersweet moment for its loyal fans over the years. To commemorate the occasion, characters and cover pages from “Kochikame” have been displayed throughout Kameari Station in Katsushika, Tokyo, the very setting of the story.
A large white banner was placed in front of Kameari Station, expressing gratitude and congratulations to the author Akimoto Osamu for 40 years of dedicated work in creating this manga.
Inside the station, everyone could admire images depicting all 200 cover pages of the manga series “Kochikame,” spanning 40 years from September 1976 to September 2016.
The evolution of the police officer Ryotsu Kankichi, the main character of the series, can be seen on the cover page from the first volume to the final volume.
The character “Ryo-san” is well-known in this station, and you can see his advertisements appearing all around.
Even the handrail of this spiral staircase is decorated with images of the character’s face, showcasing the iconic “deep furrowed brow” expression.
These special decorations will only last until the end of September, so if you are in Tokyo, Japan, make sure to visit!
