Fans of the series Game of Thrones are well aware of the significant differences between the HBO adaptation and the original novels by author George R.R. Martin. Regardless of how they differ, both versions allow viewers to engage with the story in their own unique ways. However, not everyone knows that there are several shocking plotlines from the original books that never made it into the final cuts of the show or the movies.
Below are 7 shocking plotlines from George R.R. Martin’s original story that we will likely never see (or were unfortunate to be cut) on “Game of Thrones”:
1. Jamie Lannister was supposed to kill his own son, Joffrey.
We know that Jamie killed King Aerys, but in the original story, he was supposed to kill his own son Joffrey and other claimants to the Iron Throne.
2. Sansa was just a lovesick girl.
In the first season of “Game of Thrones,” we see Sansa infatuated with Joffrey from the moment they first meet, only to realize the true nature of his character. However, in Martin’s original narrative, Sansa ends up marrying Joffrey, “the chosen one” rather than her brothers and parents. Fortunately, this does not happen in the show.
3. Sansa was supposed to die quite early.
Initially, the character Sansa was meant to die in the early stages of the series. However, as the author and writers reconsidered, they transformed her character into one of the main characters, ultimately playing a significant role later on.
4. Tyrion was supposed to be as ugly as Cersei.
Tyrion was supposed to be the one who got captured and destroyed at Winterfell. Fortunately, the author decided to make Tyrion a symbolic character.
5. Daenerys was supposed to never love Khal Drogo.
The Dothraki warrior was initially meant to be indifferent to his wife, continuing his barbaric ways instead. In the original storyline, Daenerys never loved Khal Drogo and eventually killed him to escape.
6. There was supposed to be no “Red Wedding” event.
In the original story, Robb and Joffrey were supposed to meet on the battlefield. During that encounter, Robb was meant to severely injure Joffrey and then sacrifice himself. This plotline would completely alter the narrative if it were to be included in the show.
7. There was supposed to be a love triangle between Arya, Jon, and Tyrion.
Arya was supposed to be the one caught in a love triangle with Jon and Tyrion…
