The common point of all users of Devil Fruits is the inability to swim. If a significant portion of a user’s body is submerged in water, they will weaken, and the abilities granted by the Devil Fruit will be rendered ineffective. This drawback makes it nearly impossible for Devil Fruit users to move directly through water.
However, there are some individuals who have managed to overcome this limitation to traverse water successfully.
1. Kuzan
Kuzan’s Ice Ice Fruit (Hie Hie no Mi) allows him to create, control, and transform into ice. By freezing any body of water, he can easily travel across it using his Ao Chari vehicle.
He has utilized this ability when he started a confrontation with the Marines at Long Ring Long Land. Although it is unclear what happened with Kuzan’s vehicle, shortly after he resigned from the Marine organization, Camel became his new mode of transportation. Kuzan was seen riding on Camel, a giant bird, as it flew over the water.
2. Sanjuan Wolf
Sanjuan Wolf is a giant who hails from West Blue. His notorious reputation in the past is well-known, and his immense size is a significant advantage.
Wolf’s Devil Fruit is the Deka Deka no Mi, which allows him to grow even larger. He is regarded as one of the largest beings in the world, even rivaling other giants. Unlike most Devil Fruit users, Wolf can move through water simply by walking through it. His colossal size can prevent him from sinking into the ocean, allowing him to remain in the water for extended periods without encountering any issues.
3. Avalo Pizarro
Avalo Pizarro is a notorious pirate captain. His Devil Fruit is the Shima Shima no Mi, which allows him to transform into an island, merging with it and exerting control over it.
This ability has a significant drawback: when Avalo Pizarro is transformed, he becomes vulnerable to being captured by any “enemy” who approaches him. However, he possesses more power than other Devil Fruit users in certain situations.
By transforming into an island and controlling it, Pizarro can traverse water. Since the Shima Shima no Mi is a relatively new Devil Fruit, it is not widely understood. It is possible that Pizarro’s form is not entirely compatible with the entirety of the island, or any “island” can only be partially submerged, preventing him from causing any disturbances to the surface of the ocean. Nevertheless, both statements remain speculative at this point in time.
4. Charlotte Perospero
Charlotte Perospero is the eldest son of Big Mom and a prominent figure in Big Mom’s pirate crew. He serves as the Minister of Candy, having eaten the Candy Candy Fruit (Pero Pero no Mi), which allows him to create candy and manipulate it into various forms, including weapons, limbs, and even a fully functional laboratory.
Perospero has created a giant candy slug that can facilitate his movement across the water. Big Mom has uniquely incorporated her essence into this creation, enabling it to coexist with the powers of her Soru Soru no Mi, allowing it to serve effectively in maritime combat.
5. Portgas D. Ace
Portgas D. Ace wields the Mera Mera no Mi, which grants him the ability to become fire and control flames. Ace’s companion, Masked Deuce, created a ship called Striker that allows Ace to navigate the seas.
Striker, powered by the energy of the Mera Mera no Mi, serves as Ace’s primary mode of transportation on the water. Even after joining the Whitebeard Pirates, Ace frequently utilized Striker. He was seen using it to travel during the Alabasta arc and while searching for Blackbeard.
