Doctor Strange: The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s New Magic
In “Doctor Strange,” Marvel introduces a new concept that has not yet been explored in the Marvel Cinematic Universe: magic. This superhero blockbuster opens up a new dimension for Marvel’s film brand, with the character Doctor Strange—The Sorcerer Supreme—playing a crucial role in the unfolding narrative of future films from the studio.
Disney/Marvel has invested significantly in promoting Benedict Cumberbatch, an accomplished actor who embodies the role of Strange. Disney even suggests conducting a series of promotional campaigns and events aligned with the release schedule of this prominent character. It is evident that the studio not only wants Benedict to portray this character but also aims to elevate Doctor Strange to be the “flagship” of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, especially since the contracts of Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man) and Chris Evans (Captain America) are nearing their end.
The name Doctor Strange has been around for quite some time. In “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” a significant name mentioned by Jasper Sitwell is Stephen Strange. This subtle reference hints at the importance of Doctor Strange’s existence, to the extent that SHIELD must keep an eye on him.
Recently, in an interview with the press, actor Benedict Cumberbatch discussed the direction of the character Doctor Strange. According to him, Strange will be one of the most powerful heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe: “There will be many details in the film that will help you understand why Strange is a pivotal character in the upcoming phases… Only when you reach the end will you realize: ‘Oh wow, this is the beginning of something new.’ This story relates to many other characters in the Marvel Universe.”
The role of the sorcerer begins here, and he will appear in “Avengers: Infinity War,” the blockbuster set to continue the story of the heroes from Phase 1. Additionally, Kevin Feige, the head of Marvel Studios, has hinted that in “Avengers: Infinity War,” viewers will see members of the Illuminati working together. If Strange truly is one of the most powerful characters, his role as the leader of the Illuminati will be absolutely crucial, and Strange will be involved in storylines beyond his own films.
We have yet to explore the fact that Doctor Strange opens up a vast realm of possibilities for Marvel’s development: the Multiverse. Kevin Feige has explained that the Multiverse is essentially a collection of parallel universes existing within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, not outside it.
Within this multiverse, there are dark dimensions where terrifying entities exist. Following this revelation, there have been many theories that Marvel will realize a film about the Illuminati, with members who are known to wield powerful magic or possess significant mystical abilities. Marvel will delve into magic at its core, instead of just focusing on the scientific aspects, technology, and extraterrestrial beings as in previous phases.
Currently, everything that has been written regarding Doctor Strange is primarily speculation, based on a few confirmed pieces of information. Specifically, how Stephen Strange will affect Phase 4, along with the phrase “this conclusion is the beginning of something new,” remains tightly under wraps by Disney/Marvel. The only certainty is that fans are eagerly awaiting the release date of “Doctor Strange.”
