Wolverine: The Fierce Animal Inspired by a Wild Dog
Wolverine, in English, refers specifically to the wolverine, a small but incredibly fierce carnivorous mammal known for its sharp claws. At first glance, it may seem “cute,” but if you seek to understand it, you will realize that this small animal, while diminutive, is quite ferocious and when challenged, it will fight to the death without hesitation, regardless of the size or strength of its opponent.
It is precisely this ferocity and tendency to fight to the death that makes the wolverine an animal that even larger predators, like wolves, tend to avoid. In Vietnam, although the name Wolverine translates to “wild dog,” it is often simply referred to as… a wolf.
Wolverine First Appeared as a 12-Year-Old Boy
When Wolverine became a beloved character in the Marvel comic book universe, this fierce hero also began to make appearances in various other comic series. The most notable appearance was in the “Runaways” series.
In this storyline, the main character is part of a group of teenagers who inadvertently discover that their powers are inherited. This storyline led to the formation of a separate team that unintentionally clashed with the Avengers. A 12-year-old girl in the group, with formidable strength, managed to outmatch Wolverine.
Hugh Jackman Once Faced a Lot of Challenges to Portray the Character
When Hugh Jackman was first chosen for the role of Wolverine in the year 2000, he felt quite overwhelmed as he knew little about the character. To overcome this, he studied the characteristics of the animal in order to draw inspiration for his portrayal. However, he did not realize that Wolverine was not merely a wild animal but rather a character whose name and persona also derived from that of a wolf (which could be misunderstood by many audiences in Vietnam).
As a result, he succeeded in embodying the traits of a wolf and portraying them authentically. Director Bryan Singer had to “cut” and ask him to research again, clarifying that this character should not be depicted as a wolf. This is a memory that Hugh Jackman will never forget.
Wolverine Initially Served as a Minor Character for Hulk
In his first appearance in the Marvel universe, Wolverine did not have his own storyline but was merely a supporting character brought in to fight against the Hulk. As time went on, writers grew fond of this character, leading to his separation and development into his own individual series.
Despite Being a Standalone Character, He Had No Connection to X-Men Initially
Even though he first appeared in a separate storyline for the Hulk, our Wolverine was initially not considered a major character, and his potential for recovery, along with his other abilities, was not explained as being connected to the X-Men at all. However, over time, the origin of this character was altered.
