As of now, Captain America: Civil War is the highest-grossing film of 2016 at the global box office and is the fourth installment in the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe), following The Avengers and Iron Man 3. Below, we present some interesting behind-the-scenes information that many people may not know about this blockbuster, according to IMDb:
- When the film officially wrapped, Sebastian Stan (Winter Soldier) and Anthony Mackie (Falcon) had a playful race in their superhero costumes.
- Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) was supposed to flirt with Aunt May (Marisa Tomei) in the film. In fact, the two actors had a romantic relationship in the 90s and appeared together in two films: “Chaplin” (1992) and “Only You” (1994).
- Chris Evans hinted that the role of Captain America was a significant turning point in his life, describing it as one of the best decisions he ever made.
- The film marks the 75th anniversary of Captain America. Additionally, 2016 also celebrates the 10th anniversary of the “Civil War” comic series and the 50th anniversary of Black Panther.
- T’Challa has a much smaller role in the initial script, and does not appear in costume, as the screenplay focused heavily on Spider-Man and kept Black Panther for a separate film. However, since Marvel did not have the rights to use Spider-Man, T’Challa’s role was expanded significantly, making him an important part of the storyline.
- Captain America: Civil War is currently the longest Marvel film, with a runtime of 2 hours and 27 minutes.
- In the film, Falcon uses a drone called Redwing. In Marvel comics, Redwing is a real superhero and Sam Wilson’s partner.
- Director Joe Russo shared that the “most intense scene in the film” is when Steve Rogers pulls a helicopter with his bare hands. Chris Evans trained extensively to achieve the most realistic portrayal of Steve Rogers’ immense strength.
- The Ant-Man scene on Hawkeye’s arrow is directly taken from the comic, specifically The Avengers #223.
- One day before filming the battle scene with Robert Downey Jr., Sebastian Stan sent a video to Robert, showing him preparing for the fight against Iron Man. Sebastian also added a note saying, “I hope I can fight you tomorrow, Robert.”
- Tom Holland is the youngest actor to portray Spider-Man/Peter Parker on the big screen at just 19 years old.
- When Steve and Bucky refer to a girl from their childhood in Brooklyn named Dolores, nicknamed Dot, it hints at the character Dottie Underwood from “Agent Carter.”
- The production team described Bucky Barnes as a complex character, stating: “He is not just Bucky Barnes anymore; he is not the Winter Soldier either; he is a being caught in between. There is a part of him that is controlled by someone else’s mind, and he has killed many people. So he has a tragic background. Who is he really? How will he proceed?”
- Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans compared the relationship between Iron Man/Tony Stark and Captain America/Steve Rogers to a marriage: “We love each other, but it’s complicated. You both are moving towards a similar goal, but you have different approaches. It’s messy, and that’s what makes it interesting; no one is right or wrong. It will be even harder to reach a common ground.”
- In an interview, Daniel Brühl mentioned that the budget for this film was so high that it could produce 20 other films.
