It has been two weeks since The Walking Dead returned with its emotionally charged new episode, which features a scene where Negan brutally kills a member of Rick’s group, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of fans. As we already know, Negan decided to choose Abraham as the unfortunate victim of his sadistic actions, and the shocking death of this beloved character has left a heavy atmosphere lingering throughout the series.
However, the aftermath of this event has raised many questions for the audience. Specifically, after the shocking blow that Negan delivered, Daryl still rushed to attack Negan, which ultimately didn’t resolve anything but only made Negan more determined to hunt down another target, which turned out to be Glenn.
This plot detail has left many die-hard fans frustrated because a seasoned warrior like Daryl should have known better than to act impulsively in such a situation. A single blow in the heat of the moment could have resolved nothing, but instead, it escalated the conflict, putting Glenn at risk.
Moreover, many fans love Glenn and feel that Daryl’s actions led to his demise. They argue that Maggie, who has lost her husband, should not have been left grieving alone, and that Daryl should have thought twice before acting in such a heated manner.
To clarify for fans and to prevent unnecessary blame on the director, Greg Nicotero has expressed his thoughts on this matter:
“Yes, I see that this was a necessary plot point. As you have seen in another scene, Daryl felt extremely shocked and confused. If you understand this character, you will see that Daryl is someone who is ready to sacrifice, even to the point of harming others. The reason he charged at Negan was due to the emotional turmoil, especially after Rosita’s reaction when she screamed and swung a weapon in anger after Abraham’s death. He couldn’t hold back and rushed to confront Negan to stop this act. There are moments when he thinks that after confronting Negan, others must endure the consequences of his rash actions.”
According to Nicotero’s explanation, it seems that Daryl believed that by charging at Negan, he would somehow confront him. An individual like Daryl, who is not easily deterred, would undoubtedly feel compelled to act when faced with such a life-threatening situation.
Unfortunately, he underestimated Negan, who is not your typical villain. A “normal” villain would have immediately retaliated against such a bold move, while Negan is much more cunning and dangerous. For Daryl to survive and for the group to continue, he would have to think carefully before taking further actions.
This situation will force Daryl to live with the consequences of his actions, as a character who does not easily accept defeat, but he will undoubtedly struggle with the reality of the lives lost due to his decisions. Moreover, the fact that Negan has killed someone else will also make the other members of Rick’s group think twice before acting, as they might unintentionally cause someone else’s demise through a rash decision. This heightened awareness is far more dangerous than simply risking their own lives.
In summary, Daryl’s reckless charge at Negan and the subsequent death of Glenn serve to highlight Daryl’s character flaws and illustrate Negan’s menacing nature effectively. Fans should take this as a lesson in understanding the complexities of character motivations and the consequences of their actions within the narrative.
