Even though Dormammu presides over the Dark Dimension, there exists another dimension called the Faltine Dimension. In this dimension, all beings exist solely as energy forms with no physical manifestations at all. Dormammu, along with his sister Umar, sought to escape the confines of this energy-based existence, eventually leading to the downfall of their father and their subsequent exit from the Faltine realm.
Dormammu is the Ruler of the Dark Dimension
In both the film and comics, Dormammu is portrayed as the long-standing ruler of the Dark Dimension. However, before he claimed dominion over it, the Dark Dimension was governed by the Mhuruuks, a race of beings skilled in sorcery, marking it as a peaceful era for this dimension.
When Dormammu made his appearance, he usurped the role of ruler from Olnar, who had been the previous master of the Dark Dimension, leading to catastrophic events that resulted in the deaths of millions within this realm. The ensuing chaos provided Dormammu with the opportunity to annihilate the Mhuruuks, thereby establishing his supremacy in this dimension.
Dormammu Also Has Close Ties to Doctor Strange
As previously mentioned, Dormammu and his sister Umar have a notable connection to Doctor Strange, as Umar is the mother of a daughter named Clea, who later plays a significant role in the narrative. It is worth noting that Clea is actually… the love interest of Doctor Strange. Thus, Doctor Strange’s battles against Dormammu can be seen as a familial conflict, as he must confront the being connected to his partner’s lineage.
It is ironic that Clea is indeed the partner of Doctor Strange. Therefore, Doctor Strange’s battles can be interpreted as a family feud, as he must contend with the being that threatens his beloved.

As previously noted, Dormammu once commanded the inhabitants of the Dark Dimension, and throughout his reign, he also controlled an army known as the Mindless Ones.
They appear as towering figures with little independent thought, acting solely on the commands of their master, much like robots. Their sheer numbers and strength can lead to the destruction of entire territories with ease. The Mhuruuks were also annihilated, and the Dark Dimension itself has witnessed the horrific devastation brought by these Mindless Ones.
Dormammu Has Often Attempted to Breach the Laws of Reality Against Doctor Strange
As we know, during his confrontations with Dormammu, Doctor Strange has often had to navigate precarious situations, never truly finding a foothold in a dimension that is markedly different from Earth. Dormammu has repeatedly sought ways to breach the barriers between these two realms.
Thus, Dormammu has often sought ways to subvert the laws of existence, effectively trying to conquer Earth through various means, even attempting to manipulate Baron Mordo to act as his agent in this endeavor.
Dormammu is One of the Most Formidable Villains in the Marvel Universe
Currently, on screen, we can regard Dormammu as one of the most powerful villains created by Marvel. While Ultron or Loki may merely seek ways to conquer Earth, beings like Ronan in Guardians of the Galaxy only dared to seize a fraction of a planet, Dormammu’s power exists on an entirely different level.
Dormammu’s power extends to the very fabric of reality, capable of manipulating dimensions and threatening to engulf any realm that stands in his way, including the realm where the Marvel heroes reside. To cause immense destruction in this dimension, Dormammu often seeks the Infinity Gems, just as Thanos did, but his primary strength lies within himself.
