Listed among the most anticipated films of 2016, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them has consistently excited fans, especially with the release of numerous stunning promotional materials recently. Today, to satisfy the eager fans – those who are still “hungry” for the magical world – Warner Bros. has “unveiled” an exciting poster along with detailed information about the characters that will create the “magic” for this captivating work.
1. Professor Newt Scamander (played by Eddie Redmayne)
The film revolves around the legendary character Newt Scamander from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Scamander is a magical zoologist who journeys around the world to study and document magical creatures, hoping to contribute valuable knowledge to the wizarding community. In his adventurous journey, he has rescued many magical beings, capturing various species in a special suitcase for their care and protection. Newt Scamander’s research later became a textbook, utilized in the teaching and learning of students in the wizarding world.
Oscar-winning actor Eddie Redmayne shares more about his character: “From a young age, Newt has always had a passion for creatures. He dedicates his life to pursuing his dreams. Newt even feels more connected to magical beings than to humans. He loves what he does and is a completely unique individual.”
Upon arriving in New York, Newt meets three friends – who will drastically change his life: a witch named Tina Goldstein, her sister Queenie, and particularly Jacob Kowalski – who is a No-Maj.
“The friendship among the four characters is the most important element in this film,” according to author J.K. Rowling. However, the four of them also represent the “super team” within the magical world of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
2. Newt Scamander’s “Partner” – Tina Goldstein (played by Katherine Waterston)
Tina Goldstein is a smart witch living in New York, working for MACUSA – the Magical Congress of the United States. Once an Auror (a top inspector of the magical government), Tina was demoted to a paper pusher after she overstepped her boundaries, to protect the wizarding community from exposure. She is determined to regain her former position as an investigator, which is why she must confront Newt Scamander directly on his arrival in New York.
However, when she and Newt begin to realize their mutual feelings, it leads to some awkward situations in their community. This connection brings them closer together.
3. The “Charming” Queenie Goldstein (played by Alison Sudol)
Queenie Goldstein is the lively and charismatic younger sister of Tina. There’s a lot to say about Queenie, not just for her beauty and charm, but also for her kind-hearted nature. Although still working as a paper pusher at MACUSA like her sister, Queenie has never aspired to become an Auror.
Nevertheless, Queenie’s natural warmth and her Legilimency skills allow her to read the thoughts of others, making her a valuable ally.
4. “No-Maj” Jacob Kowalski (played by Dan Fogler)
Jacob is arguably the most relatable character in this magical society as he is the only member of the group who does not possess magical abilities. Jacob Kowalski is a No-Maj working in a bakery, where he makes delicious pastries. Unable to secure a loan to start his own business, Jacob reluctantly takes a job at the bakery until he meets Newt Scamander, which completely changes his life.
At first, Jacob thinks everything is just a product of imagination, but he quickly realizes he is drawn into an adventurous journey filled with unexpected wonders.
5. MACUSA’s Chief Seraphina Picquery (played by Carmen Ejogo)
Seraphina Picquery is a powerful high-ranking official at MACUSA. She is strong-willed and fiercely protective of her community, ensuring the secrecy of the wizarding world.
6. The Enigmatic Percival Graves (played by Colin Farrell)
Percival Graves is the Director of Magical Security at MACUSA. His role involves overseeing the activities of Aurors and investigating issues concerning the magical world. After years of diligent research and practice, Graves has become a powerful wizard, but he remains a mysterious figure, even to those working at MACUSA.
7. Mary Lou Barebone (played by Samantha Morton)
Mary Lou is the founder of the New Salem Philanthropic Society (NSPS) – an organization that hates magic and seeks to expose and eradicate witches and wizards. She has three adopted children, including two daughters and a troubled son, who live in a strict environment under her control.
8. Credence Barebone (played by Ezra Miller)
Credence is the timid and withdrawn adopted son of Mary Lou. He lives under strict rules imposed by his mother. However, he later forms a bond with Percival Graves, which raises questions about Graves’s interest in Credence.
