The legendary animator Hayao Miyazaki has created many wonderful animated films over his 30-year career. He is also the co-founder of the famous Studio Ghibli film company. Recently, after a three-year retirement, Hayao Miyazaki has decided to return to direct another film.
Hayao Miyazaki will direct a new animated film titled Boro the Caterpillar. This project has been in development for over 20 years, inspired by the idea of “a tiny caterpillar that could fit between two fingers.”
Previously, Miyazaki had announced his retirement multiple times. In 1998, he mentioned that the film Princess Mononoke would be his last. To date, he has directed six outstanding films.
The Japanese media often refers to Hayao Miyazaki as “the man who never shows his face.” Miyazaki has also stated that the short film Boro the Caterpillar will be produced in collaboration with the Ghibli Museum, which has not yet satisfied him. At the age of 75, Hayao Miyazaki is set to create at least one more animated film. Given his remarkable body of work, the next film is eagerly anticipated.
Hayao Miyazaki, along with his friend Isao Takahata, founded Studio Ghibli in 1984. Since then, he and the studio have produced many iconic works such as Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, Laputa: Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Porco Rosso, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, Ponyo, and The Wind Rises. Notably, Spirited Away won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in 2003 and remains the highest-grossing film in Japan to date.
Even during his retirement, Hayao Miyazaki has not allowed himself to remain idle. He continues to work on short films and manga. Boro the Caterpillar is expected to be completed by 2019. Although the film has not yet received a green light, significant progress has already been made.
