Reasons Behind the Disappearance of the “Super Game” League of Legends MMO
In 2020, the leadership of Riot Games announced that they were developing a new massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG). The world in which this game is set is primarily based on the universe of League of Legends, leading many gamers to eagerly anticipate its release. Additionally, with the development of a game world that is rich and filled with various characters, the League of Legends MMO has the potential to become a true “super game.”

However, despite being announced over four years ago, this project has seemingly vanished from the radar. This situation has led many gamers to speculate about the reasons why this highly anticipated title has yet to materialize. Recently, in a social media post, Riot Games employee Greg “Ghostcrawler” Street shared some insights on this issue.

“Riot Games initially aimed to release the game without perfecting it to gather feedback from players. The original League of Legends and later Teamfight Tactics (TFT) were developed in this manner and were successful. However, later on, they decided to shift focus towards creating a ‘perfect’ game instead of gradually improving it based on community feedback. I believe that instead of waiting for a ‘perfect’ game, developers should strive for a more iterative approach to keep the game evolving over time,” Greg “Ghostcrawler” Street shared.

The Future of the “Super Game” League of Legends MMO Remains Uncertain
From a fair perspective, the insights shared by Greg “Ghostcrawler” Street highlight several intriguing points. Even during the development of League of Legends, there were times when the team at Riot Games paid little attention to community feedback. For instance, the phrase “Our team cannot lose balance” was expressed after a series of champions like Aphelios, Samira, Yuumi were released over a span of a year.

As for the League of Legends MMO, it seems that the development direction is not yet finalized despite being announced over four years ago. Recently, Riot Games leadership reiterated that this project is still in development, which is somewhat disappointing as they shared that the League of Legends MMO will undergo a “rebuild” once again, returning to the development process. If Riot maintains its current development direction, it may take a long time (potentially 3-4 years) before players can finally get their hands on this “super game.”
