Steam Continues to Dominate as One of the Leading Online Game Platforms Worldwide
Game developers have made it a priority to release their titles on Steam. Each year, Valve’s platform sees a significant increase in the number of new games available, which consistently surprises gamers. The year 2024 is no exception, as many users find themselves overwhelmed by the sheer volume of new titles.

According to the latest statistics from this platform, approximately 190,000 new game titles are set to launch in 2024.
In reality, this number signifies that 2024 will be a year with an unprecedented number of new game releases on Steam. Alongside major hits like Helldivers 2, Black Myth: Wukong, and Shadow of the Erdtree, there is a notable trend where many games are struggling to attract players. Reports indicate that up to 80% of the 19,000 new titles will likely go unplayed.

The reason behind this situation is largely attributed to the overwhelming number of game releases flooding the Steam platform. Many years ago, Valve implemented new features on its platform aimed at encouraging users to buy and play more games. However, not long after, some developers began creating “games” that were quite basic, primarily designed to boost their earnings from microtransactions. As a result, Valve has introduced measures to counteract these trends.

According to SteamDB, in 2024, 18,992 games were released on Steam. However, only 4,041 of these titles achieved significant sales and attracted sufficient players to escape the realm of obscurity. This means that 14,951 games released this year were virtually unplayed or unsold outside of Valve’s PC platform. Although the quality of games on Steam varies widely, there are still many “poor quality” titles that fail to gain traction.
