Recently, several exciting details emerged during Netflix’s Geeked Week event, including contributions from the live-action adaptation of One Piece.
In addition to confirming actress Lera Above as Ms. All Sunday, also known as Nico Robin, a future member of the Straw Hat Pirates, Joe Manganiello has been officially cast as Crocodile. This character is a pivotal antagonist in the Alabasta arc.

Now, actor Manganiello has announced his commitment to immerse himself in the shonen series he is set to perform in. In a recent interview, he discussed the complexities of the Crocodile character.
Firstly, it is important to note that Crocodile is one of the most significant antagonists in One Piece. Possessing the formidable Logia-type Devil Fruit, Suna Suna no Mi, Mr. 0 can transform into sand, control it, and even absorb moisture from anything that comes into contact with him.
Unlike Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates, who seek the One Piece treasure, Crocodile aims to conquer the Alabasta Kingdom using his immense power, having established a criminal organization known as Baroque Works to execute his plans.
The Origins of Crocodile in One Piece
In a recent statement, Joe Manganiello analyzed his character’s complexity and asserted that Crocodile’s past with Whitebeard has significantly shaped his future portrayal in the anime adaptation.
“From what I see, he has the potential to be Luffy’s greatest rival. He represents the dark future that could occur if he competes with Luffy… and I believe there is a part of Crocodile’s inner turmoil that makes him want to be better, similar to how he had to contend with Whitebeard or the despair of not becoming the Pirate King and achieving his goals. However, this includes a level of disbelief in himself,” the actor stated.
Exploring Crocodile’s Complexities in One Piece
Previously, Crocodile had witnessed the downfall of Gol D. Roger. Similar to Luffy, Crocodile dreamed of one day becoming the Pirate King. However, that dream was shattered when he faced off against Whitebeard and was completely defeated. After this defeat, Crocodile began to build his own criminal empire at Baroque Works, a group that employs various mercenaries and criminals to help him achieve his ambitions.
Crocodile is a villainous character, but he has the potential to hide his vulnerable side while fighting against Luffy and the Straw Hats in Alabasta, a region he hopes to dominate.
As for Joe Manganiello, many anime fans believe he is an excellent choice for this role. His passion for the series and ability to portray a complex villain make him a standout candidate for the character.
