Akira Toriyama has created one of the most iconic brands in the anime industry, with Dragon Ball being a prime example of this legacy. One of the most remarkable aspects of Dragon Ball is its diverse cast of characters.
Although the initial team of protagonists often faced significant challenges, the Z Fighters consistently banded together to eliminate formidable foes. Akira Toriyama has managed to enrich the Z Fighters’ storylines by introducing new characters along their journey. The Z team has almost always ensured victory, regardless of the overwhelming strength of their adversaries.
The Z Fighters in Dragon Ball Always Bring a Strong Team
The Dragon Ball series never lacks new characters. The creator continually introduces new personalities. Initially, only a few characters, such as Goku, Krillin, and Master Roshi, were part of the Z Fighters. However, as the story progressed, more characters like Yamcha, Tien, and Piccolo joined the team. In Dragon Ball Z, Gohan, Vegeta, Trunks, and Goten also became members. By the end of Dragon Ball Super, the Z team had grown to include over ten members.

Initially, the Z team included Goku, Krillin, and Master Roshi. Later, Yamcha, Tien, and Piccolo joined. In Dragon Ball Z, Gohan, Vegeta, Trunks, and Goten also participated. By the end of Dragon Ball Super, the Z team had grown to over ten members.
This evolution brings about a level of excitement and unpredictability, as any character could potentially appear at any moment. Even when a character seems overwhelmingly powerful, the dynamics of battle often create unexpected turns. Akira Toriyama himself recognizes that the balance of power can sometimes feel unfair.
The creator stated: “I always think about having many characters on our side, but only one villain. If you think about that, it shouldn’t be a problem, right? (laughs) They can connect with each other to fight against him. (laughs).”

Goku was the first to transform into a Super Saiyan, followed by Vegeta and Gohan, who also achieved this form. All characters had to train intensely, and their emotional states played a significant role in their transformative journeys.
While Trunks and Goten had not yet faced these intense situations, they were still able to transform into Super Saiyans. This transformation, akin to a mythical metamorphosis, became a playful element of their characters.
After all these developments, there has never been a chance for any character to truly challenge the Z Fighters. If by any means a character could, it would likely be one of the powerful characters who could potentially join forces to create a formidable alliance.
Akira Toriyama is well aware that he is creating an uneven playing field for the main characters, but all developments are driven by the storyline. Considering the overwhelmingly powerful characters, it may be necessary to form groups to counterbalance the odds. Furthermore, Saiyans typically do not team up to counter threats, as they enjoy fighting individually. On the flip side, characters like Piccolo, Tien, and Krillin are not strong enough to compete against formidable foes like Frieza, Perfect Cell, and Majin Buu.
