Deadpool & Wolverine: A Game-Changer for the MCU
On July 22nd, the global premiere of Deadpool & Wolverine took place in New York, USA. Almost immediately, the latest installment of Deadpool became a hot topic, receiving rave reviews from leading entertainment outlets.
The world is aware that the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is currently facing a downturn, with several films underperforming at the box office and receiving critical backlash. The most recent example, The Marvels (2023), was described as the worst-performing Marvel superhero film, grossing only $46.1 million in the US and $110 million globally. However, Deadpool & Wolverine is rumored to be reversing this trend, bringing renewed hope for the MCU.

Before its release in 2016, Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) was not widely regarded as a heavyweight. However, this foul-mouthed anti-hero has proven to be anything but ordinary. The character’s distinct personality helped the film rake in $132.4 million domestically. Following this success, Deadpool 2 grossed $137 million in 2018.
Now re-entering the MCU, Deadpool is not alone; he is joined by Wolverine (Hugh Jackman), who originated from Fox’s X-Men series. Deadline comments that this collaboration is a significant milestone, bridging the gap between the two franchises. Apart from the stellar performances of these two A-list stars, the film is brought to life by director Shawn Levy, who has previously collaborated with Jackman on Real Steel (2011) and Reynolds on Free Guy (2021) as well as The Adam Project (2022).
Journalist Pete Hammond noted that Reynolds continues to excel at portraying a character unlike any other, with a unique blend of wit and cultural references that resonate deeply within the US. However, Jackman’s return is the standout highlight. Deadline stated that Wolverine’s portrayal in this Marvel film is the strongest iteration of the character yet.

Meanwhile, The New York Post claims that Deadpool & Wolverine is the best Marvel project since Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021). It not only captivates audiences but also evokes nostalgia for past beloved characters.
This is not the first time Deadpool and Wolverine have appeared together on screen. Previously, they crossed paths in X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009). However, they have never embarked on a road trip together, which promises to be an entertaining and humorous journey. The character dynamics are markedly different, with Jackman’s Wolverine being more reserved and brooding compared to Reynolds’ Deadpool, who is a riotous, crude character often delivering sharp quips. This contrasting relationship creates comedic moments that are sure to entertain.
Rotten Tomatoes has rated Deadpool & Wolverine at 80% as of July 24th, with numerous reputable American critics praising the film.
“Deadpool & Wolverine is an unmissable MCU experience. It’s dazzling, funny, and more emotionally engaging than anticipated. In simple terms, just go see it,” wrote Cameron Frew from Dexerto.
“Deadpool & Wolverine is a cinematic delight. It’s a tribute filled with love for Marvel’s many characters over the years while maintaining the signature humor and vibrant visuals of the previous two Deadpool films,” noted Jonathan Sim from Comingsoon.net.
“Deadpool & Wolverine is an action-packed film that delivers meaningful themes and an exhilarating experience. It has redefined the superhero film genre. Corrin, Jackman, and Reynolds make for an exceptional trio,” remarked Carla Renata from The Curvy Film Critic.

Box Office Projections and Market Potential
According to Variety, Deadpool & Wolverine is expected to close out July with box office revenues ranging from $160-170 million by the end of the weekend (July 26-28). Some box office analysts believe that the return of Wolverine and the successful collaboration of these two iconic characters could lead to a revenue spike, estimating that the film could hit $190-200 million over its opening weekend.
Regardless of the final figures, Deadpool & Wolverine is set to outperform the original Deadpool (over $132 million) and become one of the highest-grossing R-rated films in history. Deadpool & Wolverine is also positioned to be the highest-grossing film of 2024, surpassing another Disney release, Inside Out 2, which earned $155 million.
In the international box office, the superhero film is targeting $180-190 million in its first week of release. As of July 28, global revenues are projected to be between $350-390 million. Disney has reportedly invested around $200 million in production and approximately $100 million in marketing for the film.
The success of Deadpool 3 could potentially wipe out concerns regarding the MCU’s viability. Over the past 15 years, the studio has established itself as a dominant force in Hollywood with 33 films. However, recent failures such as Eternals, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and The Marvels have left the MCU in a precarious position. To address these challenges, the company is focused on developing sequels and new installments, with Deadpool & Wolverine being the only Marvel film slated for release in 2024 – a milestone not seen since The Avengers in 2012. This strategic shift indicates a clear focus on reviving the franchise.
