The Connection Between One Piece Movies and the Manga: Insights from Oda
Eiichiro Oda’s recent comments have clarified the ongoing relationship between the One Piece movies and the original manga. The author emphasizes that it is possible to “force” the events of the Strong World movie (and other films) into the main storyline, but only when these events are not “too relevant” to the manga plot.
Oda also clarified that Shiki from Strong World bears similarities to Shiki from the manga. However, he had never intended to grant this character the Float-Float Fruit. In fact, Oda has a personal rule against giving any character the ability to fly freely in the sky.
“I created the principle that there should not be a character who can freely fly in the air. Therefore, I decided to seal the Float-Float Fruit (as this is a manga about pirates).” Oda explained.

However, since Shiki was granted the Float-Float Fruit in the anime movie, the manga author had to integrate this ability into the main storyline from that point forward. This is quite unusual, as the main story often needs to align with the events of the movie, rather than the other way around. As Oda mentioned, “Indeed, we have created a sort of ‘reverse integration’.”
Shiki is a mysterious character within the One Piece universe. He was once a member of the Rocks Pirates along with notorious figures like Whitebeard, Kaido, and Big Mom. After the crew disbanded, he went on to establish his own pirate crew known as the Golden Lion Pirates.
Shiki’s Paramecia-type Devil Fruit allows him to fly and enables any inanimate object that comes into contact with him to levitate. Prior to this, it was considered a type of Devil Fruit that was unofficial until now. Oda’s clarification has officially added the Float-Float Fruit to the list of recognized Devil Fruits in the One Piece series.
