In recent years, Asian actors have had increasing opportunities to appear in Hollywood. From Lee Jung-jae’s remarkable performance in “Squid Game” to the Oscar-winning films “Parasite” and “Minari,” Asian stars have made significant impacts in what we call the mainstream film industry. Hong Kong, the home of film enthusiasts, is the birthplace of some of the most talented actors, from legendary martial artists like Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee to contemporary stars like Donnie Yen. Many renowned Hong Kong actors have played leading roles in blockbuster films, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of millions worldwide with their performances on the big screen.

The West has had a long-standing skepticism about Asian talent, but this perception has shifted dramatically over the last few decades. The search for representation and equality in Hollywood is becoming more compelling with films like “Crazy Rich Asians” and series like “Squid Game.”
In Hong Kong, iconic stars like Jackie Chan and Donnie Yen have led the charge for Asian talent for a long time, with martial arts performances that still have no equal. The legacy of these actors includes notable works like “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End,” Marvel’s “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” and “John Wick: Chapter 4.”
Jackie Chan

Starting from humble beginnings to becoming an international superstar, Jackie Chan’s journey is nothing short of extraordinary. His first significant project was the action-comedy film “The Big Brawl” in 1980, which unfortunately did not perform well at the box office. Despite the setback, Chan continued to land roles in Hollywood films like “The Protector,” the “Police Story” series, and many others. However, it was the blockbuster “Rush Hour” series that truly established him as an A-list actor, alongside Chris Tucker.
Over the past decade, Jackie Chan announced his retirement from action films, stating that he would only take on fewer, safer roles to protect his health. Nevertheless, at 70, he continues to shine on the big screen in any capacity. Recently, Jackie Chan starred in the action film “Hidden Strike” alongside John Cena, released in 2023.
Donnie Yen

Donnie Yen is a martial artist and actor who has elevated kung fu to new heights on the big screen. His breakthrough in Hollywood came with the release of the martial arts film “Enter the Dragon” in 1973. However, his untimely death that same year drew worldwide attention.
Yen established a lasting legacy worldwide at the age of 32, and his influence continues to resonate. With “Enter the Dragon,” the character of martial artist Bruce Lee, portrayed by Yen, received widespread acclaim from audiences. Furthermore, his representation of Chinese culture on the global stage has been warmly embraced.
Donnie Yen

Donnie Yen is regarded as one of the strongest martial artist/actors globally, on par with Hong Kong stars like Jackie Chan and Jet Li. One of the most recognized Asian stars, Yen is well-known for his role as the blind warrior Chirrut Îmwe in “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.” His performance garnered praise, and he became a prominent figure in Hollywood films, including the “John Wick” franchise.
His groundbreaking role in “Rogue One” saw him take on the part of Chirrut Îmwe, a warrior who aids the Rebels in their mission to destroy the Death Star. His character’s compelling portrayal and depth have been widely celebrated. Yen’s second Hollywood project was “John Wick: Chapter 4,” alongside Keanu Reeves. Following his remarkable performances, there are many rumors that he will reprise his role in a follow-up film titled “John Wick: Caine,” which will be filmed in Hong Kong.
Jet Li

“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” is a film that opens doors for Asian cinema on many fronts. This is the first Marvel film featuring an Asian actor in a leading role, with Simu Liu portraying the titular character. Not only that, but it also marks the first time an Asian actor has taken on a leading role in a major Marvel film. Liu plays the character Wenwu, the father of Shang-Chi. Even the West cannot overlook the undeniable charm of Liu, who has received much acclaim from critics for his portrayal of a compelling character.
Gordon Liu

It can be said that Gordon Liu is no less than Jet Li or Jackie Chan when it comes to martial arts talent. Director Quentin Tarantino was so impressed with Liu’s work that he cast him in both “Kill Bill” films. In the first installment, Liu played Johnny Mo, the leader of the Crazy 88 gang. In the second installment, he portrayed the martial arts master Pai Mei with a distinctive white beard.
Unfortunately, Liu has retired from acting and is currently living in a nursing home after suffering a severe leg injury, which has left him partially paralyzed. However, his work continues to inspire many martial arts enthusiasts worldwide.
