The Light Novel featuring Zoro is scheduled for release in June 2024, confirming that the story will follow his journey as he embarks on new adventures after leaving Shimotsuki Village—his hometown where he trained with his friend Kuina, aiming to become the strongest swordsman in the world.
One Piece has yet to delve deeply into Zoro’s past before he joined the Straw Hat Pirates. We know that prior to becoming a pirate, he was known by the nickname “Hawkeye.” He even turned down an opportunity to join the Baroque Works organization led by Crocodile.
Moreover, Zoro previously teamed up with two other swordsmen, Johnny and Yosaku, although they only made brief appearances. Thus, everything regarding Zoro’s background remains largely unknown. This upcoming novel will explore these details and reveal a new perspective on Zoro’s life.
Zoro’s Light Novel Overview

Zoro’s novel will be divided into several parts. The first chapter has already been released, showcasing Zoro traveling from one village to another, aiming to challenge all swordsmen, to ultimately prove himself as the strongest swordsman.
During his journey, he encounters a formidable opponent known as “The Dojo Slayer.” This individual is recognized as a legendary swordsman who has claimed thousands of victories. Upon learning that this swordsman is Mihawk, Zoro becomes excited, realizing that he is facing the strongest swordsman in the world.
However, when Zoro seeks out “The Dojo Slayer,” he discovers that he is merely a shadow of Mihawk. Zoro is determined to surpass Mihawk and secure his victory in battles, aiming to become the best swordsman. This quest leads him to leave his village in search of new swords and specifically, Mihawk.
This is just the beginning of Zoro’s tale, focusing on the Dojo Slayer and his departure from the village. The novel will include additional chapters, detailing his transformation into the legendary swordsman. A teaser trailer hints: “Finally, Zoro has left Shimotsuki Village to become the strongest swordsman. What challenges await him on his journey to find Mihawk, the greatest swordsman in the world?”
Authenticity of Zoro’s Light Novel
Zoro’s novel is not overseen by Oda, so it cannot be considered canon. Nevertheless, fans can still enjoy following Zoro’s new adventures, as this tale represents a side story within the broader narrative, highlighting important moments in his journey, even if it does not capture the entirety of Zoro’s past.
