Eiichiro Oda has revealed intriguing details regarding the character arcs of Monkey D. Garp and Monkey D. Dragon. Although they are not central figures in the main narrative, both characters play significant roles as Luffy’s grandfather and father, respectively.
Garp is renowned as one of the strongest vice admirals in the Marines, while Dragon is infamous as the most wanted criminal in the world. Both characters are compelling figures, leading fans to eagerly anticipate their backstories and the moments that shaped their lives in the future.
Oda has crafted an expansive world in One Piece, which promises to include numerous side stories about these characters after the main plot concludes. The manga is set to begin the Elbaf arc soon, but it remains unconfirmed how many chapters will precede the final battle.
Even though Luffy’s journey has been hard to believe at times, it must come to a satisfying conclusion. While there are no concrete assurances that the story will consistently include long side arcs, Oda has ensured that there will be significant stories about his beloved characters.
In a 2018 interview, Oda expressed his deep affection for Garp. Due to the numerous elements that needed to be addressed in the main storyline, he had to set aside some of his favorite characters. Thankfully, the upcoming side stories will provide the author an opportunity to explore Garp’s adventures as a Marine vice admiral.
Oda intends to delve deeper into Garp’s relationships with Akainu, Aokiji, Smoker, Koby, Hina, Cipher Pol, and even Roger. Additionally, he will illustrate a storyline featuring the Revolutionary Army and its leader, Monkey D. Dragon. Notably, there’s still a long way to go before One Piece concludes, and even more stories will emerge before these side tales are published.
