The Power of Love: Sanji’s Unique Strength in One Piece
In the world of One Piece, Oda has introduced numerous powerful abilities, elevating the characters to new heights, surpassing even the dreaded Devil Fruits and Haki. For Sanji, one of the most prominent aspects of his strength is his love. This love stems directly from a traumatic experience during his childhood, instilling in him a strong sense of empathy and kindness.
For those who may not know, Sanji is the son of Judge and Sora. Previously, his father subjected him to experiments while he was still in the womb. Among the four siblings, Sanji is the only one born normal. The others were transformed into emotionless monstrosities due to the experiments.
In return, Sanji’s mother had to pay the price with her life, sacrificing herself to preserve her son’s emotions and goodness, making him one of the kindest characters in the entire world. This is why Sanji is a deeply emotional person, whose strength is constantly augmented by the love he possesses.

Manifestations of Love in Sanji’s Abilities
This love manifests in various unique ways. For example, Sanji always displays remarkable resilience, although this ability is rooted in his genetic modifications. However, it can only be fully realized through the emotional strength that he possesses.
Sanji first showcased these newfound strengths during his battle against Jabra in the Enies Lobby arc. After that, it became evident that he had attained a new level of power. When Oda was asked about this in the SBS section, he revealed that Sanji’s new abilities could be seen as a result of his emotional state, particularly his love, which allowed him to ignite flames without being burned by the fire he created.
In Wano, Sanji’s emotional power was highlighted once again during his battle with Queen. The overwhelming strength of the Beast Pirates made Sanji realize he was using a form of “cultural heritage” to generate flames. Sanji’s emotional state and love further intensified, allowing him to produce these flames. He even reached a point where he could generate hotter flames than any other fire.
In the recent Egghead arc, Sanji’s love was once again demonstrated when he fought against Admiral Kizaru. He completely obliterated the light-based attacks directed at him. Sanji proved that the strength of love can indeed manifest in physical form, and he clearly stated that such physical phenomena could only occur because love transcends all other dimensions in the world.

The Significance of Love in One Piece
Sanji’s emotional strength is a very tangible concept in the world of One Piece, and it undoubtedly creates a unique dynamic in battles. In SBS Chapter 62 of One Piece, Oda was asked how Garp could potentially cause harm to Luffy during his visit to the Enies Lobby arc. Specifically, during this time, the concept of Haki was introduced into the story. It raised the question of whether Garp was using Haki to inflict damage on Luffy. This discussion stemmed from Luffy’s struggles with the limitations of being made of rubber, where Garp stated he could harm Luffy simply through the strength of love.
In response, Oda clarified that Garp did not use Haki. Instead, he could genuinely inflict pain on Luffy through the sheer emotional strength of love, even if Luffy’s body was rubber. This clearly indicates that the power of love exists beyond Haki, Devil Fruits, or other abilities, and it certainly creates a different dynamic in battles.
