Let’s take a journey back in time to the pivotal moment in Dragon Ball Super, where a new transformation was introduced for Goku.
Akira Toriyama, the creator behind this iconic series, revealed an astonishing detail. It turns out that the creation of Super Saiyan Blue is based on a rather simple concept.
The story begins with the film Dragon Ball: Battle of Gods, where we first witness the transformation into Super Saiyan God.
The Beginning of All Transformations

Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods not only introduced remarkable characters like the God of Destruction Beerus and the angel Whis but also opened up a vast universe of possibilities.
With the powerful foes emerging, Goku needed to level up. This led to the appearance of Super Saiyan God, which closely resembles Goku’s original form but features a distinct change in hair color. Eventually, Super Saiyan Blue emerged, and Toriyama discussed it in an interview.
The Reason for Choosing Blue
Now, the big question arises: “Why was blue chosen for the new transformation of the Saiyan?”. Toriyama’s explanation was both intriguing and straightforward. In an interview, he stated, “In Battle of the Gods, it was red, so I thought I should choose a contrasting color: blue. That’s it (laughs). Actually, I intended to make it white, but red would be too similar to ‘next form’… so I thought I should make it something different (laughs).”

Toriyama’s explanation was both enlightening and simple. The creator decided on blue after using red in Super Saiyan God, deeming blue the suitable choice for the next film. Toriyama even mentioned that he considered white but ultimately decided on blue for a character appearing in the future.
Super Saiyan Blue, or Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan, is the direct evolution of Super Saiyan God. The user achieves the Super Saiyan Blue state after attaining God-like powers. The result is a significant change in appearance, with hair still resembling the Super Saiyan style but featuring a new striking color.

Additionally, Toriyama revealed a hidden detail, noting that he had initially chosen white for this transformation. However, when considering the character’s future role in the Future Trunks saga, he decided that blue would be more suitable for a different aesthetic. The gray hue of the character’s energy could be seen later, possibly reflecting the original idea.
Upon its debut, Super Saiyan Blue became one of the most powerful forms and the most iconic in the series. Goku and Vegeta utilized this form as a vital part of their arsenal in battles, pushing previous transformations to the sidelines. It’s fascinating to think that a seemingly spontaneous decision by Toriyama led to a new power level in the Dragon Ball Super universe.
