On the morning of March 13 (Vietnam time), the latest trailer for The Little Mermaid was unveiled during the 95th Academy Awards. Following two earlier teasers, Disney continues to introduce audiences to the adventurous story of Ariel, yet it has sparked controversy.
As for the appearance and character design of Ariel the mermaid this time, it remains a focal point of contention. Some opinions suggest that the character looks different from the animated version, with a more pronounced stylization this time around. The upper body of the character does not quite match with the tail, creating a feeling of “living art.” Additionally, the dreadlock hairstyle does not clearly reflect the traditional depiction of the mermaid, resembling more of a Caribbean beach vibe.

However, the emotional portrayal of Halle Bailey as Ariel also stands out, with her natural expressions resonating strongly during several scenes. While sharing the screen with notable actors like Melissa McCarthy and Javier Bardem, Bailey has yet to disappoint and is entirely captivating. The unique aspect of this rising star born in 2000 is her powerful singing voice, which evokes strong emotions.
Halle Bailey’s performance is also receiving high praise.
Audience Comments:
– Is this mermaid actually the daughter of Calypso, the goddess of the sea who carries Jack Sparrow?
– Vote for the prince who loves the princess like a gem.
– The prince also looks quite charming, but these two main characters seem to have a connection.
– Everyone can agree that she looks beautiful, but the film’s adaptation of Walt Disney’s animated version has Ariel with light skin. If she weren’t Ariel, then no one would raise any concerns about her skin tone.
– The film’s visuals resemble those of a horror movie too much…
In addition to the main character Halle Bailey, the trailer for The Little Mermaid also introduces supporting characters like Ursula, King Triton, and Ariel’s animal friends such as Flounder, Sebastian the crab, and Scuttle the seagull. The film is officially set to release on May 26, 2023.
