The First Transformation into Super Saiyan: A Memorable Moment in the Dragon Ball Saga
The transformation into Super Saiyan occurs during the Frieza saga, when Goku faces one of the most powerful foes that the Z Fighters have ever encountered. The death of Krillin unlocks Goku’s latent potential and allows him to achieve this form, which had never been seen before in the Dragon Ball universe.

During this transformation, Goku’s power increases dramatically, and his black hair turns golden. According to creator Akira Toriyama, the change in hair color also serves a specific purpose: to enhance the visual impact of the transformation.
This transformation was a significant choice by Toriyama, as he aimed to create a visual distinction that resonated with audiences. The decision to change the hair from black to gold also stemmed from the practical need to differentiate the character in the manga illustrations.
Hiroyuki Nakano, editor-in-chief of Weekly Shonen Jump, further explained that this decision helped the illustrations stand out and be more dynamic. By utilizing lighter colors, the action scenes could be completed more swiftly. This choice was also a financially strategic decision.

The Super Saiyan Transformation: A Pivotal Moment in Dragon Ball
Until the very end of the original Dragon Ball series, Goku was still a child. With the advent of Dragon Ball Z and the introduction of Raditz, we learn that our hero belongs to a race of extraterrestrial warriors.
Editors Kazuhiko Torishima, Yu Kondo, and Fuyuto Takeda, who worked with Toriyama on the manga, noted that the creator did not view Dragon Ball as a story filled with complex interconnections or multiple plot threads that needed explanation. Toriyama’s intention was always to write simply and directly, focusing on action.
“His storytelling style is straightforward and direct, leading to a distinct narrative without excessive subplots or long-winded explanations. When a plot point needed adjustments, he often quickly introduced new ideas. For instance, the revelation that Goku is a Saiyan was not the result of a convoluted plot twist, but a necessary narrative element. When the story faced challenges, Toriyama quickly found solutions,” the editors remarked.
