Vietnam’s Gaming Industry: 12 Million Gamers and Projected Revenue of $1.66 Billion by 2025
At a recent event, Maayan Kotler, Director of the Gaming Sector for the Asia-Pacific region at Thailand’s Digital Economy and Society Ministry, revealed that Vietnam boasts approximately 12 million gamers, with 70% of them engaging in mobile gaming.
This statistic highlights Vietnam’s emergence as a key player in the Southeast Asian gaming industry. The strong growth of the gaming community, combined with the support from the government, is enabling Vietnamese game developers to not only succeed domestically but also expand their reach into international markets.
In this dynamic environment, social media platforms like TikTok are increasingly playing a significant role in promoting gaming content. According to a recent survey, over half of TikTok users have discovered new games through content shared on the platform. Video games are becoming more prevalent in mainstream cultural spaces, often blending elements of entertainment, music, and lifestyle.
Currently, Vietnam ranks among the top 5 mobile game-producing countries globally, according to Bloomberg’s 2023 rankings, with over 4.2 billion USD in revenue—2.5 times higher than the global average. The mobile gaming sector, favored by Vietnamese players, is projected to reach revenues of 712 million USD by 2029.
In addition to market potential, the effectiveness of advertising campaigns by local game developers is also improving. Titles such as Revelation, Thien Kiem Chi Van, and Kiếm Thế Origin have achieved positive results by utilizing TikTok to enhance user engagement and improve advertising effectiveness.
Despite facing challenges related to policy, competition, and talent development, the Vietnamese gaming industry is poised to leverage its strengths to expand both domestically and internationally. The involvement of international technology platforms, if utilized effectively, could significantly boost growth, improve user engagement, and elevate the profile of Vietnamese game developers on the global stage.
