Overwatch Mobile Makes Its Return with a MOBA Twist?
According to the latest news, Blizzard Entertainment has confirmed its collaboration with NEXON to develop the mobile version of Overwatch Mobile. Unlike its original version, which is a first-person shooter (FPS), Overwatch Mobile is set to be a MOBA game—a genre that is gaining significant popularity on mobile platforms. If this is the case, it will directly compete with major titles such as Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, Honor of Kings, League of Legends: Wild Rift, and Arena of Valor.

However, given the current landscape, the character designs and gameplay style of Overwatch could lead to a unique and groundbreaking MOBA experience. That said, the development process for this game under NEXON remains less than clear. By the end of 2024, major players in the South Korean gaming industry, such as NEXON, Netmarble, KRAFTON, and NCSOFT, are all expected to compete for the rights to publish Overwatch Mobile and develop the Starcraft IP. Ultimately, NEXON emerged victorious, marking a significant step forward in enhancing its presence in the Asian market.
Unfortunately, Overwatch Mobile Also Brings Disappointing News
Although marketed as the new “bombshell” from Blizzard on mobile platforms, Overwatch Mobile will only be released in two regions: South Korea and Japan. This limits its availability globally—especially in regions like South America, North America, and Europe—where fans are left disappointed. In reality, while South Korean companies have secured global publishing rights from Blizzard, American firms have stepped back, retaining significant control over the market.

Currently, the development of Overwatch Mobile is directly overseen by Walter Kong, the General Director of the Overwatch franchise. Within the South Korean context, this game is also being referred to as “Overwatch 3”, indicating that it is a crucial strategic step in the Overwatch development cycle.

At present, Blizzard has not yet announced an official release timeline. Nonetheless, this information is enough to excite the gaming community. After many years of waiting and having to endure “placeholder” games like T3 Arena, fans can finally expect to experience Overwatch in a legitimate format on mobile devices.
