In 1986, the television series “Journey to the West” debuted in China, creating a sensation across Asia. To this day, even after more than four decades, it remains an iconic work in the realm of television that cannot be replaced in the hearts of viewers. Although the filming period was fraught with challenges and low budgets, director Yang Jie and the crew managed to produce a version of “Journey to the West” that continues to be beloved.
Few know that behind the classic scenes of “Journey to the West” are deeply touching stories about camaraderie and humanity. Director Yang Jie dedicated herself entirely to the project, and many crew members still hold a fondness for the 1986 adaptation, recalling the emotional journey they experienced together. Despite the hardships, there were plenty of joyful moments and beautiful stories about the people who helped create this legendary series.
Director Yang Jie frequently expressed her gratitude towards three individuals whom she regarded as the backbone of the production team. It could indeed be said that these individuals were the ones who “saved” “Journey to the West.” Without their contributions, this masterpiece might not have achieved the success it enjoys today.
Actor Li Hongxiang
The first individual mentioned by director Yang Jie was actor Li Hongxiang, who played the beloved character Pigsy (Zhu Bajie). Not only was he a talented actor, but Li Hongxiang also became a close friend of the director. During production, as the crew faced financial difficulties, it was reported that the central branch of China Central Television (CCTV) halted funding for “Journey to the West,” putting the entire project at risk.
Recognizing the severity of the situation, Li Hongxiang did not hesitate to offer his support and even sought additional funding from the Ministry of Public Security, contributing 3 million RMB (equivalent to approximately 10,800 USD at current exchange rates) to finance the production. Director Yang Jie always remembered this generous gesture, considering it a lifeline for the entire production team and the “Journey to the West” series.
To further save on production costs, actor Li Hongxiang also took on seven different roles in “Journey to the West,” with his most notable role being Pigsy in the segment “The Monkey King and the Banquet.”

Actor Diem Hoai Le
Diem Hoai Le, who portrayed the character Sandy in the 1986 “Journey to the West,” is renowned as “the most iconic Sandy in Chinese cinema.” He made significant contributions to this classic series, even enduring health issues during filming.
Throughout the production of “Journey to the West,” Diem Hoai Le traveled extensively with the crew for six years, while also immersing himself in numerous supporting roles in the film. Known for being empathetic and supportive, Diem Hoai Le was always willing to assist others and often overlooked the details of his own compensation during filming. He even generously shared his earnings with fellow cast members.

In 1993, during the filming of “Journey to the West,” the crew used strong insecticides to combat mosquitoes. The smell was overwhelming, causing everyone to feel unwell, especially Diem Hoai Le, who suffered greatly from the fumes but continued to work tirelessly. The exposure to harmful chemicals eventually led to his health decline. In 2009, he passed away from respiratory complications at the age of 73. The entire cast felt the loss deeply.
Artist Hang Han
Although not a well-known actor, artist Hang Han was an essential right-hand man to director Yang Jie, contributing significantly in various roles such as set designer, costume designer, and even choreographer. Director Yang Jie regarded Hang Han as a highly talented artist, whose significant contributions were irreplaceable in the film’s production.
When the production faced budget and manpower shortages, Hang Han and Diem Hoai Le often collaborated to take on multiple roles within the film. With their extensive technical background, they were able to excel in any character they portrayed.
These invaluable contributions led director Yang Jie to consistently acknowledge the importance of these three individuals, even though audiences may primarily recognize names like Liuxiao Ling and Liu Yuchun. She believes that their efforts helped make “Journey to the West” a masterpiece.
