Superman Set to Make a Grand Return in the DC Universe
On July 8, the highly anticipated Superman movie, the first bombastic entry of the new DC Universe (DCU), will officially premiere, introducing a completely different version of the iconic superhero to audiences.
However, following a series of trailers released recently, many fans have expressed skepticism regarding this project, as the character Clark Kent not only struggles with the immense responsibilities that come with being Superman but often finds himself “pushed to the limits.”
The current Superman of the DCU is not merely portrayed as a figure who faces heavy defeats. He is also depicted in dire situations, often captured and restrained in glass chambers. Even the notorious Lex Luthor is shown in the latest trailer, pulling the military together to breach the stronghold of Superman.

James Gunn’s Vision for Superman
As the head of DC Studios and simultaneously taking on the director’s role for this new film, James Gunn has made it clear that he intends to showcase a more vulnerable Superman. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, he shared that he doesn’t hesitate to “nerf” the character’s powers.
“I want Superman to be able to be hurt,” Gunn stated. “In this narrative, I see people debating, ‘Who would win in a fight? Superman or Homelander, or Adam Warlock versus Brightburn?’ It should definitely be the most ridiculous debate ever since the dawn of time.”
He continued, “If we consider who wins in these battles, they will probably be the strongest contenders. I’m just creating a character called God Man; it could potentially wipe out the competition with just a blink. But I’m not sure what else we can do.”
“Honestly, I’ve talked with many people, and they often think, ‘I like Batman more because Batman can get hurt.’ I understand that. It seems we might have a Superman who can actually struggle.”

Future Development for the DCU
Gunn’s comments have only scratched the surface of the potential trajectory for the DC Universe. Mentioning Batman highlights the significant impact this character has had on shaping the direction of the DCU in the upcoming decade.
Batman is a well-known superhero, yet this character does not possess superhuman abilities. However, he can still stand on par with many other powerful individuals. Due to his determination and intellect, Batman quickly becomes a crucial member of the Justice League, leaving a lasting impression on many fans.
According to Gunn, Superman does not need to be overly “invincible” to avoid being a target. There are numerous ways to explore compelling narratives for this character. The essence of Superman is one of the core elements of his story.
Although Kal-El originates from the planet Krypton, he is raised and nurtured on Earth. Deep within his steel exterior lies a human heart, a vulnerability, and an understanding of the green planet’s culture and the nurturing values of the Kent family.
Clark Kent is just as important as Superman. If we see this superhero facing difficulties in the DCU, it is the human side of him that can serve as a source of strength to help him rise again.
Superman can face defeat and endure pain, but he always embodies the heroism that transcends every challenge to protect the world he loves. The stakes are higher than ever, and the conclusion of each battle will not simply be in a matter of seconds.
