According to the Los Angeles Times, the Wild Cards series, which debuted in 1986, will continue its journey to the big screen and is set to appear in theaters within the next two years, coinciding with the conclusion of the iconic Game of Thrones series.
“Wild Cards is a unique series of novels that draws its inspiration from a vast, expansive universe, blending elements of excitement and creativity akin to the comic book worlds of Marvel and DC (even though they might be more edgy, realistic, and consistent), featuring a multitude of characters with varying personalities,” the author wrote on his personal blog.
This work is a crossover between two prominent elements of fiction – history and speculation. Wild Cards is set against the backdrop of the United States in 1946, when an alien virus is discovered in Manhattan and quickly spreads across the globe.
“For the unfortunate individuals who become infected, 90% will suffer a gruesome death. This situation leads to a dramatic crisis,” Mr. Martin wrote. “9% of others will mutate and transform into something resembling a monster, while a lucky 1% will gain extraordinary superpowers and become superheroes. The world will be entirely altered,” he added.
According to current information, the film adaptation will be produced by Universal Cable Productions, a subsidiary of NBC Universal. This company has previously released several successful television productions such as Being Human, The Magicians, and Mr. Robot.
Mr. Martin’s co-editor, Melinda M. Snodgrass, stated: “Of course, Hollywood is Hollywood, and nothing is guaranteed. However, I still hope that Wild Cards will officially hit the screen within a year or two.”
