Warcraft may not have received glowing reviews, but this blockbuster film has still achieved impressive box office success in the Chinese market and among die-hard fans of the legendary strategy game series. Not to be outdone, by the end of this year, many are looking forward to Michael Fassbender’s upcoming release of Assassin’s Creed, which is officially set to hit theaters in November.
Meanwhile, Bethesda, the creator of the legendary game series The Elder Scrolls, is also making waves. Despite the challenges faced by many blockbuster films receiving low ratings this year, Bethesda remains focused on adapting its iconic franchises into films. Notably, the legendary Peter Jackson, director of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, is involved in this endeavor.
At QuakeCon, Bethesda’s Vice President of Marketing, Pete Hines, shared: “In fact, we have discussed turning our games into films extensively, and we are debating whether it makes sense to hand our game properties over to someone else who has no experience in crafting the worlds of The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, or Dishonored.”
“Or, we might not decide to make a film at all because we know exactly what we are doing with our products. We want the original creators to determine how their games are portrayed in the film industry, not just any director, producer, or studio.”
Clearly, the prospect of adapting video games into films is a rare opportunity for large gaming companies. However, Hines expressed a strong desire for Peter Jackson to take The Elder Scrolls to the big screen. “Imagine if one day Peter shows up at Todd Howard’s office and says ‘I want to make a film about Elder Scrolls,’ you can be sure that will be a conversation we won’t easily forget!”
