“Suicide Squad”, the highly anticipated supervillain movie of the summer of 2016, has arrived and is making fans sit on the edge of their seats, with its release date just around the corner. While we don’t yet know many specific details about the film’s plot (aside from Amanda Waller being the one to assemble the villains, and a few hints about Enchantress), here are 11 intriguing facts you might not know about “Suicide Squad”:
1. The first teaser for “Suicide Squad” surpassed view counts of “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.”
Just three weeks after releasing the first teaser, the video clip had over 50 million views on YouTube, while “BVS” only reached 42 million views.
2. The film will celebrate a special 50th anniversary for the Joker.
“Suicide Squad” is a tribute for the 50th anniversary of the Joker, who first appeared in live-action films back in 1966 (portrayed by Cesar Romero). Jared Leto’s debut as the Joker was released on April 24, 2015, marking the 75th anniversary of this villain’s first comic appearance.
3. Ryan Gosling was almost cast as the Joker.
In fact, the role of the Joker was initially considered for Ryan Gosling, Sharlto Copley, and Matt Smith. However, Gosling turned down the role because he couldn’t commit to the entire film series.
4. Tom Hardy wanted to play Rick Flag but couldn’t.
Tom Hardy was once in line to play Rick Flag before Joel Kinnaman was officially confirmed for the role. Hardy couldn’t participate due to filming commitments for “The Revenant,” a demanding project that required extensive preparation, and he later expressed regret about missing out on the role in “Suicide Squad.”
5. Many notable actresses, including Zooey Deschanel and Amanda Seyfried, were considered for Harley Quinn.
Finding the perfect Harley Quinn was no easy task! Emma Roberts was originally offered the role but turned it down to participate in “Scream Queens.” The list of actresses considered before Margot Robbie finally landed the role includes Imogen Poots, Amanda Seyfried, Olivia Wilde, Emma Watson, Zooey Deschanel, Lily Collins, Sara Paxton, and Evan Rachel Wood.
6. The casting list for Deadshot was even more impressive than you might think.
The complete list of actors considered for the role of Deadshot included Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Oscar Isaac, Daniel Craig, Matthew McConaughey, Johnny Depp, Keanu Reeves, Colin Farrell, Jason Statham, Matt Damon, Idris Elba, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Alexander Skarsgård, Ewan McGregor, Robert Pattinson, Michael Fassbender, Joel Kinnaman, and Jon Hamm. In the end, Will Smith was the one who got the role.
7. Each character’s costume contains significant meanings for comic fans.
Harley Quinn was created for the animated series “Batman: The Animated Series” in 1999, and later debuted in comic form in “Batman: Harley Quinn,” illustrated alongside the Joker in a shiny tuxedo with a distinctive flower. In the trailers, we catch glimpses of the Joker in a tuxedo featuring a similar flower.
8. Killer Croc’s makeup is entirely practical, with no CGI.
There is no CGI used to create Killer Croc’s character in the film; all of it is done with practical effects. The entire makeup process took around five hours to complete. His appearance was further enhanced by a unique crocodile skin coat.
9. All members of the squad have a deeper connection to Batman.
You might feel some tension regarding the characters, especially considering that they have all had encounters with Batman. Unfortunately for Bruce Wayne, he is their common thread with the dark villainy that prevails in “Suicide Squad.” In an interview, producer Zack Snyder noted that every member of the squad shares a unique experience with Batman since he is the one who has captured them all.
10. “Suicide Squad” has the potential to introduce many more villains than we expect.
There are rumors that Ra’s al Ghul, Hugo Strange, and other iconic Batman villains may make cameo appearances in the film to set the stage for future DCEU films. While there isn’t much confirmed information yet, there’s a possibility that Christopher Plummer could appear as Ra’s al Ghul in a minor cameo.
