Dragon Ball Super is currently in a critical phase, yet fans are eagerly awaiting the next arc, particularly the much-anticipated Black Frieza arc, which is heating up more than ever. Since Black Frieza first appeared in the Granolah arc, fans have been impatiently looking forward to the showdown between him and the Z fighters.
However, despite Black Frieza’s overwhelming power, there is another character lurking in the shadows, posing a greater threat to our heroes. This character is currently a wild card, but he could easily transform into a formidable opponent at any moment in the storyline: that character is none other than Broly!

Broly is Not Evil, but He Lacks Self-Control
Broly first appeared in Dragon Ball Z: Broly – The Legendary Super Saiyan and later in its sequels. Although he is quite famous, the Broly Saga in DBZ is not considered canon in the manga timeline. However, Dragon Ball Super reintroduced this character in the film Dragon Ball Super: Broly, and after that, he was briefly referenced in the manga, officially bringing him into the canon of Super.
It is important to note that Broly in Dragon Ball Super is not the same monstrous villain as he was in the DBZ version (where he was a ruthless killer, mentally unstable). He is primarily depicted as a quiet, introverted individual who seeks peace. However, when provoked, his Saiyan nature kicks in, and he can transform into a rage-fueled powerhouse. When he becomes the Legendary Super Saiyan, Broly begins to unleash devastating attacks without thought. In some ways, he resembles Gohan when he taps into his latent power, yet he loses control much more easily.

Broly’s Uncontrollable Potential
Broly has teamed up with Goku and Vegeta, becoming their newest ally. Fearing that Frieza would target Broly, Goku brought him to Beerus’s planet for training, helping Broly learn to fight without losing control. After their battle with Gohan, it became clear that Broly could potentially match the strength of Gohan’s Beast form. Toyotaro (the artist of Dragon Ball Super) later confirmed that Broly possesses a power level comparable to the strongest transformations of Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, and Piccolo.
In Dragon Ball Super, Broly has only been seen transforming into the Legendary Super Saiyan, a rare form considered the ultimate stage of the typical Super Saiyan. However, there may be an even stronger transformation that has appeared in Dragon Ball Heroes, which is said to be the most powerful form Broly has ever achieved in any Dragon Ball media (such as Legendary Super Saiyan 2, LSSJ3, and the Great Ape form of LSSJ). Toyotaro has previously introduced Broly’s Great Ape and Broly LSSJ4 in the Dragon Ball Heroes: Victory Mission manga, hinting that any form could potentially appear in Dragon Ball Super in the future. If the Legendary Super Saiyan Broly is already on par with the strongest Z fighters, then a Legendary Super Saiyan 4 Broly could potentially surpass them all!

Will Broly Become a Hero Once Again?
The unique aspect of Dragon Ball Super’s portrayal of Broly is that he is depicted as a good-natured individual, but he can easily turn into a destructive force due to overwhelming provocation and loss of control when in his Legendary Super Saiyan form. Therefore, Broly still has the potential to become a wild card, especially if he unleashes further Legendary Super Saiyan transformations, particularly LSSJ4. He could become even stronger than Black Frieza!
However, considering the ongoing story arc of Dragon Ball Super, it remains to be seen if Broly will improve his self-control and aid the Z fighters in the Black Frieza arc, especially since Frieza could very well target him. Regardless, the Black Frieza arc will be the perfect opportunity to showcase Broly unlocking LSSJ4. From there on, the narrative might depict him as an ally, a foe, or even both (first helping out, then losing control).
