If the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is heading towards Secret Wars – the culmination of the Kree-Skrull War storyline, then Marvel Comics is buzzing with plans for what will happen after this event. One of the major highlights is the showdown between Spider-Man and Godzilla, two of the most iconic symbols of popular culture globally.
Specifically, in April, Marvel Comics will begin publishing the series Godzilla vs. Spider-Man, with the script written by Joe Kelly (Deadpool) and the artwork created by renowned artist Nick Bradshaw (Wolverine & the X-Men). This series takes place against the backdrop of the events following Secret Wars (1984 – 1985) and follows Peter Parker’s superhero journey, filled with engaging plot points such as his struggles with the Daily Bugle, the legendary black suit of Spidey, and his complicated relationships with Black Cat. This will also mark the first time Godzilla visits the city of New York after previously making a memorable appearance in Hollywood during the late 70s.

The official synopsis of Godzilla vs. Spider-Man states: “After the explosive events of Secret Wars, Peter Parker a.k.a The Amazing Spider-Man returns to Earth with a brand new, stunning suit. His life is not without challenges, including a complicated love triangle with MJ and Black Cat, pressure from the Daily Bugle, tax issues, and supervillains, while Godzilla is rampaging through New York City, determined to wreak havoc.”
Additionally, Godzilla is not a stranger to the Marvel universe, having previously appeared in the comic series Godzilla: King of the Monsters, published from 1977 to 1979. In an interview with IGN, writer Joe Kelly shared, “As soon as I learned about the idea of Godzilla x Spidey set against the backdrop of the 80s, I jumped on board. This new series is an opportunity for me to flex my creative muscles while bringing these iconic characters together, and I hope to recreate that ‘nostalgia trip’ I had while collecting all the Spider-Man comics.”

The Godzilla vs. Spider-Man series is set to be a significant treat for long-time Marvel fans, especially those who have followed the King of the Monsters’ numerous appearances in Marvel comics. Furthermore, this epic confrontation could also be a concept that Marvel Studios could explore in the future. A potential collaboration between the MCU and the MonsterVerse, the two largest cinematic universes today, is sure to bring a blockbuster clash to Hollywood and the global film industry.
The first issue of Godzilla vs. Spider-Man will be released on April 30 of this year.
