There is little known about the only officially recognized female ruler in Chinese history, Empress Wu Zetian. The story of her rise to power has been adapted into films and has become an integral part of many people’s lives.
Alongside her immense power, Wu Zetian was also renowned for her striking beauty, captivating all who laid eyes on her, much like a blossoming flower. Some have even suggested that her beauty played a significant role in her ascension to power, as she captured the heart of Emperor Gaozong, which became the key to her eventual reign as Empress.
From ancient paintings of Wu Zetian, AI has recreated her image, adding color and even reversing time to depict the Empress in strikingly realistic, beautiful ways.
The imperial court was initially skeptical of Wu Zetian’s beauty. However, if we look back at the records regarding her reign, it’s clear that Wu Zetian was a woman who possessed beauty that captivated hearts and minds.
Originally named Wu Zhao, she entered the imperial palace at the young age of 14 during the reign of Emperor Taizong (reigned 626-649). In the palace, she was given the name Wu Mei Nü.
Her alluring beauty had a profound impact on Emperor Gaozong, who fell deeply in love with her. However, Wu Mei Nü was not without her challenges, as she faced significant competition in the palace.
It is said that upon hearing tales of a woman named Wu Mei Nü, Emperor Gaozong was intrigued. However, he was also aware of the risks of favoritism in the court.
On May 26, 650, Emperor Gaozong officially recognized Wu Zetian, later known as Empress Wu, as his consort, elevating her status in the court. After this, during a visit to the Cangning Temple, Emperor Gaozong encountered Wu Mei Nü, who was then serving as a nun. Despite being in a humble position, she was still the stunning beauty he remembered.
Following a series of significant developments, Wu Mei Nü was eventually restored to favor at the court of Emperor Gaozong, marking the beginning of her political ascent.
In 663, after enduring a long period of illness, Emperor Gaozong passed away, and Wu Zetian ascended to the throne, becoming the first female ruler in Chinese history.
Wu Zetian (a title given posthumously, with the full title being “Empress Dowager Wu Zetian”) held power for over 40 years. According to legend, even at the age of 82, when she passed away, she remained captivating. This explains why, even during the reign of Emperor Gaozong, she managed to maintain much of her charm, which continued to captivate those around her.
Throughout her reign as Empress, there is a clear connection between her beauty and her political prowess. Without her striking appearance, it is unlikely that her story would have continued beyond her reign.
