Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is a screenplay written by renowned author J.K. Rowling, set in the same universe as the Harry Potter films. The story focuses on the character Newt Scamander (played by Eddie Redmayne) and the magical creatures he keeps in his suitcase, taking place in 1926 New York. This timeline occurs before the events of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, which is set several decades later.
During the promotional phase for the upcoming film, director David Yates officially announced that the second installment of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will feature a younger Albus Dumbledore. Currently, the casting for the role of the Hogwarts headmaster in his youth has yet to be confirmed.
In addition to the appearance of a younger Albus Dumbledore in the sequel, David Yates has confirmed that Newt Scamander will return, and both characters will have several scenes together. This raises the question of what kind of relationship they will share.
Previously, Warner Bros. announced that Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them would have three installments, but recently they have decided to expand the series to five films, demonstrating their confidence in this franchise. The script for the next installment has not yet been written, but the studio has indicated that “the next film will be more serious as it reflects the dark times facing the wizarding world.”
Johnny Depp is also set to join the “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” franchise amid his ongoing legal battles with Amber Heard.
The “dark times facing the wizarding world” likely refers to the rise of Gellert Grindelwald, a character known for his ambitions to become the ruler of the wizarding world. Grindelwald was once a close friend of Dumbledore (a secret and deep love of his), before turning into a dark wizard. There are rumors that actor Johnny Depp has been cast in this role for the next installment, although this has not yet been officially confirmed.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is directed by David Yates with performances from Eddie Redmayne, Ezra Miller, Colin Farrell, and Katherine Waterston. The film premiered in Vietnam on November 18, 2016.
