Among all the TV Series currently being produced, Game of Thrones has secured an irreplaceable position in the hearts of viewers worldwide. The show is not only remarkable for its content but also features many shocking details that are cleverly woven into scenes, leaving the audience profoundly impressed.
For viewers, the realism in the special effects of Game of Thrones goes beyond just fire-breathing dragons and magnificent castles. It is also manifested through the shocking death scenes that have become a unique trademark of the series. Fans often remark, “The deaths of characters in real life are a special delicacy that only Game of Thrones offers.”
Recently, in an interview on Variety, Mat Krentz, the lead visual effects supervisor from Image Engine for Game of Thrones, shared insights about how his team worked hard to create those shocking death scenes, making them feel real on screen.
Notably, he also shared details about the process of creating the character Ramsay Bolton (played by Iwan Rheon) and how the infamous dogs he raised were used in the scene depicting his demise. The most iconic scene involved a dog jumping into Ramsay’s lap and tearing him apart.
“We had to shoot this scene from many different angles multiple times. The dog was filmed against a green screen, then Ramsay’s scene was also shot on a green screen. We then composited everything together in post-production,” he said.
Although this scene was executed effectively, due to its brutality, the filmmakers decided to shoot a different version with a composite model for simplicity.
“Some scenes are truly unique to Game of Thrones, such as characters being brutally smashed against walls and dying right on the spot. To film this scene, we used visual effects techniques to create the characters crashing into walls, then added in effects like blood splatter for realism!”
These techniques and visual effects are processed on computers, which allows for the creation of scenes that feel realistic. With meticulous attention to detail, these shocking death scenes are crafted, making each character’s demise in Game of Thrones a poignant moment for viewers.
Game of Thrones Season 7 will return to HBO in the summer of 2017.
