On January 2, Deadline reported that Avatar: The Way of Water has achieved a global box office revenue of $1.4 billion. The sequel has surpassed Black Panther ($1.347 billion) and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 ($1.342 billion), placing it among the top 15 highest-grossing films of all time.
According to Hollywood Reporter, Avatar 2 has held steady in ticket sales after two weeks of release. As of Monday morning, the film has grossed $82.4 million in its second weekend alone, bringing its domestic total to $421.6 million.
Based on this upward trend, industry experts predict that the domestic box office revenue of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever ($439.6 million) will be surpassed soon. With a projection of reaching $400 million, Avatar 2 is poised to become the third-highest-grossing film for Disney in 2022, following Black Panther 2 and Doctor Strange 2.
In just two weeks to hit the $1 billion mark, experts believe Avatar: The Way of Water has a strong chance of reaching $2 billion. Not only is it performing well in the domestic market, but the film is also attracting international audiences, particularly in China (over $150 million), followed by France (nearly $100 million).
In Vietnam, the film has generated over 200 billion VND, surpassing local titles such as Thanh Sói and Đảo Độc Đắc. At the end of 2022, it broke records for the highest-grossing film in Vietnamese theatres, overtaking Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
The sequel to Avatar continues the story from the original film released in 2009. It explores the adventures of the Na’vi people. The main character, Kiri, is the daughter of two characters with a strong desire for exploration. She inherits her parents’ skills and must navigate the ongoing conflict with humans, this time involving a vast and powerful water-based environment.
Previously, the original Avatar (2009) had a staggering box office gross of approximately $77 million. However, it took a while for the film to achieve this milestone at the box office. After its release, it maintained a steady presence in theatres, remaining in the number one spot for seven consecutive weeks and consistently ranking in the top 10 highest-grossing films over three months. Eventually, it grossed $760 million in North America.
