The future of Dragon Ball remains a mystery. The Dragon Ball Daima anime has concluded earlier this year, while the manga is still in a state of limbo. In previous discussions, insiders have confirmed that Shueisha has plans to continue the series for many more decades to come.
However, with the Dragon Ball Super manga still lacking updates after the final chapter from Akira Toriyama, there may be some significant news regarding Son Goku and the Z Fighters. Toyotaro, regarded as the successor to this shonen series, is currently working on a new manga project, which may affect the time he dedicates to the Saiyans.
At the recent Japan Expo Paris, Toyotaro confirmed he would be collaborating on a completely new manga alongside the editor of Dragon Ball, Kazuhiko Torishima. This new project is said to be an entirely original work by Toyotaro, meaning we shouldn’t expect it to relate to Goku’s current storyline.
Detailed information about this new manga project is still scarce, but the panel hinted at the following: “Toyotaro, the mangaka of Dragon Ball Super, is discussing with editor Kazuhiko Torishima, a person who has made a significant mark in the history of manga, about his very first original manga!” Kazuhiko shared the strong techniques that he has been honing throughout his career.”

Toyotaro’s Surprising Start
Toyotaro began his career in the manga world in quite an unexpected way, working with Akira Toriyama on Dragon Ball Super. Previously, he had created a fan comic titled Dragon Ball AF for avid fans. This experience helped the mangaka gain a strong foundation, leading him to contribute to Dragon Ball Heroes, a manga that features characters and heroes returning from the past of the shonen genre. It was this work that allowed Toyotaro to “secure” a position working on the current manga.
As the Dragon Ball Super manga has developed, Toyotaro has not only handled the artwork but has also worked closely with Toriyama in crafting the story arcs for characters like Moro and Granolah the Survivor. If Toyotaro returns to create all future chapters for this legendary shonen series, it will be interesting to see whether he will manage the entire project independently or seek assistance in building the future for the Z Fighters.
Regarding the anime adaptation of Dragon Ball Super, fans are still waiting for updates from Toei Animation about adapting the conflicts involving Moro, The Heeters, and Granolah onto the screen. With production focusing on the events of the new arc in One Piece, it is uncertain when the Z Fighters might make their return. After the Dragon Ball Super movie concluded with the Super Hero saga, the series is set to continue with two new animated films that will further enrich the shonen universe and introduce many new heroes and characters.
What do you think about Toyotaro’s new manga project? Will it impact the future of Dragon Ball Super?
