Since its debut in 2008, after 16 years, the film series remains one of the most prominent brands from DreamWorks. It holds a special ‘universe’ that encompasses everything from animated films to comic books and merchandise. In response to the eager anticipation from many fans and viewers, the studio has released the first trailer, unveiling a host of new characters embarking on thrilling adventures this time around.

After the success of the first film, which grossed nearly $632 million, the subsequent installments, Kung Fu Panda 2 and Kung Fu Panda 3, were released in 2011 and 2016, respectively. The three films have collectively earned approximately $1.8 billion at the global box office, establishing Kung Fu Panda as one of the highest-grossing animated film series of all time. The next installment, Kung Fu Panda 4, is also in development as DreamWorks aims to reclaim its box office glory.
The bear protagonist, Po, has now become a legendary figure in the Kung Fu world, known as the Dragon Warrior. After three epic adventures, he has faced numerous challenges and has honed his martial arts skills to become a renowned martial artist. However, the journey has also brought him to face new threats. Po is set to return as the beloved Dragon Warrior of the Valley of Peace, and this role has introduced various challenges that will test him in new ways.

Right from the start of the trailer, Po must adapt to a new ‘spiritual technique.’ He finds himself needing to master the art of abstaining from indulging in his favorite foods while focusing on enhancing his mental focus and spiritual prowess. Notably, Po needs to quickly find and train a new potential Dragon Warrior before he can fully embrace his new responsibilities.
Meanwhile, the outside world is not quiet either. A formidable new villain, known for his deadly reputation, emerges—an evil shapeshifter named Tactics Shadow. This villain possesses the terrifying ability to transform into any creature, even able to adopt the appearance of Po’s greatest foes. Even Tai Lung, upon encountering this dangerous foe, finds himself at a loss. Tactics Shadow has become a perfect ‘counterpart’ to Tai Lung, posing a significant challenge to the Dragon Warrior.

In the process of understanding this new villain, Po meets Zhen, a cunning fox with a quick wit, who is also being held captive by the villain. If they can work together, Po and Zhen may find a way to confront Tactics Shadow. As they pursue the villain to the lair, Po and Zhen discover they must face not only the villain but also their own inner demons.
During their journey to protect the Valley of Peace from Tactics Shadow’s terror, Po and Zhen will need to collaborate. This adventure is sure to challenge Po’s capacity to find the next Dragon Warrior, making him question whether he can truly find someone worthy of the title.

Kung Fu Panda 4 will be directed by Mike Mitchell (known for Trolls and Shrek Forever After) and produced by Rebecca Huntley (from The Bad Guys). The screenplay continues to be executed by the original writers from the first film, Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger.
The film features the iconic voice talents of Jack Black as Po, Dustin Hoffman reprising his role as Master Shifu, James Hong as Po’s adoptive father Mr. Ping, and Awkwafina as Zhen. Notably, Oscar-winning actor Ke Huy Quan (from Everything Everywhere All at Once) will also lend his voice to a new character named Han.
